I've always plaayed 2D platformers and fighting games with analogue stick. People tell me I'm crazy. While I admit in new games I play there can be some hiccups with using the stick, it is perfectly fine once you get used to it. Celeste for example I have had some issues in the past with dashing the wrong way, but it never happens anymore. D-pads are just uncomfortable for me to use and in the case of fighting games I have way more misinputs with them than the analogue stick.

First, props to recognizing personal choice above all. That's not a cop out, but a valid part of your opinion. However, I think several of your points are misaligned: * That a circle is somehow incompatible with a 2D performer. It's a circle, a flat 2D shape. There is no incompatibility there. * That analog sticks measure movements in 360 degrees. Nope, still intertwined two axes of movement, just like a D-pad, except in an analog stick has higher granularity (> on/off) for the measurement of each axes, and that diagonal movement is restricted to be

Great video. Feel like I've learned a lot about input, often I don't even think about controller options but this information is very helpful, thank you 😁

I just want to add, sometimes an analogue stick truly fits a platformer more so than a dpad. The variable input could be useful for having a slow and fast movement speed. Being able to go diagonally could also be super useful if the platformer has some functionality requiring the up or down directions (like in Celeste where up and down affects your falling speed, or Hollow Knight where up and down affects what abilities you can or can’t do). There could be moments where the platformer acts like a top down in some instances where the full 360° rotation is useful (like the golden feather in Celeste). However, all of this doesn’t matter since keyboard is better anyway lol.

Not all 2d platformers use digital input. You basically forgot one major point here, D-pad are not granular which can also be a bad thing depending on the game. Some 2d platformers allow you to have control over your acceleration, which a D-pad simply can't do, meaning you would handicap yourself severely if you use one.

While I see your point, I think it really depends on the game. You kept only bringing your own game which does depend on being quick and tight controls, but your game isn't the only game. Kind of an example, I know that older mario games aren't compatible with analog, but there was multiple times I wish they could be so I don't have to keep slightly tapping the dpad to move.

This has me wondering if anyone's ever experimented with using the velocity of the analog stick rather than it's position as a means of registering a direction. For example, moving the stick to the right would count as pressing right even if the stick itself was still on the left side of the deadzone. Essentially allowing you to move your character without ever crossing the deadzone.

The d-pad on the Xbox 360 controller was so crap I started using the analogue stick to play Castlevania - Symphony Of The Night. Soon got used to it. I prefer a good d-pad but sticks are surprisingly effective for 2D.

While most engines treat dpads like buttons, they're actually a little more complicated than that. In your standard input API the dpad returns a value between 0 and 360 (this might be scaled by a hundred to avoid floating point math, but I digress). What this means is that depending on your hardware, you may get more than 8 directions from your dpad.
@hugogogo13

It doesn't make any sense. It just depends on the game, some you'll have to aim, fire arrows, dash in a direction, throw hooks to hand on. All those would need a joystick. And what are you saying about the mag, there's no lag because there's 36 000 possibilities, the engine always gives a Vector2

The main reason why some people don’t think this is because all 3 of the main controllers D-pads suck. And on the Xbox and Switch they aren’t particularly easy to reach. I have a controller with a wonderful D-pad in the PS pattern and I use it to play most of my games on my iMac, it is wonderful. I understand why Microsoft and Nintendo did this with the controller, because people don’t play 2D Platformers nearly as much as they used to, and D-pads only really work as the main input for this genre.
