Before World War II, a million Jewish children lived in Poland. Vast majority of them were murdered by the Germans during the Holocaust. Mere several thousand survived, mainly thanks to individual initiatives of adults, or to organized rescue actions. In order to be rescued, Jewish children were secretly led out of the ghetto and refuge was found for them on the “Aryan side” with Polish families or care institutions. Could children still be children during the Holocaust? What decisions were faced by the parents and those saving Jewish children? We present Polish and Jewish accounts on the Holocaust from the oral history collection of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
