I’m getting back into KSP after not playing for a few years and your tutorial videos are the best!

I skipped a lot of these contacts until a polar orbit occurred to me. It takes a lot of time warping, but you can just equip a single cheap orbiter with a thermometer, pressure gauge, and pilot, and just leave them in orbit. Take the contacts and let them knock stuff out as they go, no cost for contract completion except time.

Method number two really opened my eyes: Surveys can be combined with other contracts, which force you to launch a new rocket, while the direction of your launch doesn't matter, e.g. escape the atmosphere, reach first orbit, ferry tourist to kerbin orbit. This way you can earn the money, needed in early game, faster.

Love your vids. Finally got the hang of rendezvous and docking. Not super efficient like you yet but my 52 year old reflexes on console mean I overcook burns a bit. How do you determine the number of parachutes required? Had to revert my tourist contract and mount a rescue operation because my hitchhiker cans were exploding on impact. But man that was fun! All my kerbals are safe.

I've never looked into the math behind parachutes in this game. Myself, I just guess and test to see what works.

Parachutes depend on the atmosphere, if you are expecting hitchhiker's to last on reentry heat to Kerbin that may be the issue first you need to slow it down so it isn't going to burn up... So if you had an engine on it to slow it's entry I'd have put 2 radial chutes on it for when it's in the atmosphere

YOU CAN DO THAT CRAP FROM ORBIT?!?!?!?!?! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!! I thought these crap contracts had to be done IN THE ATMOSPHERE!!!!! THANK!!!!! YOU!!!!!!

I feel you bro, i thought the same! I literally slapped my self on the face from the hours and hours of my life, after 200hs of KSP career, just doing these thinking I had to be burning at x2 or x3 speed into the atmosphere

Thanks for the great video. With a high altitude jet design, I used a separate liquid fuel engine because I wanted to see if I could conserve fuel by controlling the throttle, and use it to travel between different zones, but the polar orbit idea is clearly a lot easier. I was still able to fly out, collect data, and come back to land successfully. Landing back on the airstrip is tricky!

Hi Mike, I've watched many of your KSP videos over the last few years and learnt more than I thought possible about the game. I just wanted to (rather belatedly) thank you for the many tutorials, which you have clearly put an enormous amount of time and effort into producing thus enabling me (and many others, undoubtedly) further our Kerbal careers! You have definitely taught me more than that other fella... I forget his name now... Scott something, I think ;-) I sincerely hope you plan to do the same for KSP2 once it hits early access next Feb. Keep on keeping on!

You are very welcome. I wouldn't do it if I wasn't having fun, and Yes, I plan to continue with KSP 2. I suspect their in game tutorials will be better, but there will no doubt be gaps to fill.

Double up on the same engine type could help speed up your jet as in add in more of the same engines you already have 2 engines double it up to 4 or more but 4 engines can help speed up your jet.

Hi Mike, I'm sure you know this but I mention it here because I think others should too: when the solid rocket goes through its burn it loses mass so the center of mass of the plane might be very different at burnout. I always check the com full and empty of fuel and try to adjust for that the best I can. No use having a plane that upon burnout lawn darts into the ground :p Great stuff otherwise, subbed!

Mike, I've finally decided to start playing on my old gaming laptop and not the ps4, it's so weird getting used to the PC controls. Still loving your content. Nice to see you deal with the gravel runway, it's like the first thing I upgrade in career, can never get planes that can cope

Great video again! Thanks. I learned so much about KSP by watching your videos. Can you do the next contract guide about interplanetary travel and gravity assist?
@MikeAben

That will certainly come up at some point. In the meantime, I do have a getting to Jool video and gravity assist video in my older tutorial series.
Great content as always, thanks! Looking forward to a possible tutorial on high-tech, long-range, all-science, crazy-fast jet plane... (edit: emojis not working?)

3:10 The Wheasley isn't that advanced though. Pack three of them on a high maneuver and high wing surface plane and you can pop above 20 km. Of course, you can only travel up to around 12km, but if you go supersonic at 9km and then use the atmosphere to fling yourself up, you can easily reach even 25 km, with just the second tier of jet engines.

Maybe it's different on the console version, but I definitely tried an orbital flyover and it didn't work for these missions
@Torbjorn.Lindgren

Yeah, the contract he shows all say "in flight" which according to KSP rules *should* mean that it has to be done in atmosphere (that's part of the definition of that "situation")., I play on PC but I can't tell if this actually broken that way there or not - I never grab the high altitude missions. Also, I tend to have problems shaking the "finish early to win" (in Kerbin time!) gamer mentality so my playstyle is more "time for more missions" rather than "timewarp" so doing these via a polar orbit and lots of timewarp is just... FOREIGN. I think he had more waypoints than he showed contracts for on the screen? so I guess another option is that the mission he ran didn't specify "in flight". I thought these always did for Kerbin but I don't consider myself a KSP expert.
@B-Roll_Gaming

@@Torbjorn.Lindgren i personally just use a wheesley jet plane with a liquid fuel fuselage that ends in a reliant rocket engine. Toggle the rocket on and off with an action group and you can easily bridge the gap from 18km (the pointthat the wheesley engines stop working) and 20km (the highest point that these kinds of missions will ask you to reach)

My biggest issue with planes is always take off. No matter what, it always sways from side to side. Ideally, I'd like it to be laser straight without SAS so that I can use a scientist as a pilot.. as soon as you unlock the SAS module it doesn't really matter that much, but even with that it still sways a bit.. super annoying. Any help or suggestions are appreciated boys.

If I were to guess, either the landing gear or rudder are not lined up with the central axis of the plane. I have a plane making tutorial if that helps. kzitem.info/news/bejne/q6CLk6OMnnODpZg

How do you do this on The Mun
@MikeAben
5 ай бұрын
For that I'd insert myself into a polar orbit, though those altitudes can get pretty low. I've typically put myself into a 10km orbit then, as the waypoint(s) in question are approaching, I'd lower my periapsis around that latitude, raising it again after getting that waypoint.
