I said this the last time, but your problem is that your frame sides are out of alignment - the right hand side (viewed from crank end) is further forward than the left hand side - this means that the crank is out of alignment, not the piston - it's skewed away to the left hand side, as you found when moving the cylinder to the left made it all turn freely. So try undoing the 3 bolts under the base plate that hold the right frame side on, move the right side side so it lines up with the left and see how it then all fits. You would then have the option of enlarging the holes in the base plate such that you are able to bolt the frame side back on such that it actually aligns and you should be all straight. which is fairly easily bodgable with a file/drill/epoxy :) And also not visible.

Try slackening off the six counter sunk screws on the bottom and see if the two half's will slide to adjust crank angle and allow block to align up.

Try swopping over the bearing blocks, the're not symmetrical , that would push the entire crank in the right direction . Tom S.

Just drill out the clearance holes in the baseplate and you will have enough wriggle room to align it.

I'm thinking! I have a couple of convoluted ideas, but even so, I'm thinking that if there's enough meat left to do it, you could find the best alignment for the cylinder, and clamp everything down tight. As long as it all turns freely, you could drill four entirely new bolt holes in the new alignment. Once done, you could then file the recesses for that bar, and then make a new, slightly wider bar, to fit into the new alignment. The purpose of the bar is, I assume, to prevent the cylinder from "walking" in use.

It was designed by one guy, and the plans made available in a magazine article for home machinists. All in the youtube series I posted last time!

Hi Adam, all I can say is good luck with what you propose to do with that but I do think that the all round poor quality of machining on it that it was probably only ever built as a static model. Maybe just maybe it was intended to run and the guys skills were just not up to the task. It's a lot of work to get it running however briefly before it seizes, hope you manage it and I will keep watching so you can prove me wrong. AHAA. Best regards..Terry..

Dont move the cylinder, instead just elongate the slots to your main bearings. The slightest movement of the main bearings will solve your crank alignment and I doubt you will even have to re drill the holes.

I think that's going to be the easiest way to fix it - I was thinking of getting the frame sides to align, but shifting the mains would work and with far less work.

I think it's time that you got a metal scribe so that you can mark things before you knock them out. It might save you a lot of time trying to figure out how things go back together.

Having gone through the video again I can see a gap on the right side of the crank web looking in the direction of the cylinder and none on the left, the problem lies either with where the timing gear is fitted or the journal extension being to long forcing the crank shaft to the left, if that was fixed the cylinder could remain where it was originally. I have a small lathe and could turn down the journal extension if it is seperate from the main journal but I do not have a four jaw chuck at present so could not chuck the whole main. I used to have much more machining capability but sold off all my equipment when I retired and got some smaller stuff, much smaller, I could also weld that cylinder in place,I have TIG as well as MIG and stick. I also live in Norfolk near Fakenham.

Look at crank bearings, one is wider than other, may be you can exchenge places and crankshaft will sit in perfect place? May be just rotate them 180°?

Good news! Is it not possible to make it adjustable so you can slide the cylinder back and fourth maybe make the bolt holes on the base plate ovals so you can adjust it if need be, and slightly file out the keyway so the key could fit back in better than it does 👍

Could you bolt a plate across on the original holes where the hopper sits and then bolt the hopper to the plate where it needs to sit.

If you decide to have it welded, don't epoxy it first. Slap a big G clamp on it top to bottom to hold it. Cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to welding and epoxy would cause all sorts of problems.

Is it a diesel? Does it have enough compression? Is the hole in the cylinder end threaded for a model airplane glow plug? Will it run on model airplane glow fuel? May have to lower the nitro. On pins and needles to see this run. Great vid. NØPXJ

I would love help you out, but I'm in Mid Wales. There mudt be somebody closer. Also, like others have said, the crank alignment may be your issue and possibly an easier fix. I certainly think you should get together with a machinist and give it a good dose of looking at before moving metal. Just my two penneth.

You didn't read all the many comments that told you it was out of line, Perhaps you did ?.Try turning the rod 180 degrees first, probably made to line up that way ?. Also actual crank shaft is not straight and true on the left hand, from the rear side.

No need for any welding, if you made two pieces of flat stock that fit tight between the bed uprights under the cylinder you could bolt through the sides to secure them then fix the cylinder to those! Drill holes big enough in the bottom of the bed to access/pass through the bolts/Allen screws into the bottom of the cylinder. Mind you this all depends on how much meat is on the bottom of the cylinder.
@Equiluxe1

Could well be that without that key in place there is enough wiggle room to get the cylinder lined up, tighten up the screws and then maybe a spot of weld.
