This is one of my favorite examples of why each piece of Chant should be sung differently. Too often I find that Gregorian chant is always sung the same way, every time, with every piece. How can one read these words and not desire to sing with more gumption and enthusiasm than how we would sing "De profundis"? The most amazing part of this particular occasion, was that the energy that the men gave in this was not even rehearsed. I gave them some gestures to reflect the text, but it was among the most moving and convicted expressions of the soul I have heard from these singers. Sure, perhaps a bit of adrenaline from the Liturgy itself, but this is certainly a response to an encounter with the Risen Lord we celebrate now at this Mass!
