Hi, thank you for sharing your experiments. Would you please consider testing e-readers as simple type writers? I'm an author and use Boox Notes S with BT keyboard for writing as distraction free device. I've heard there is a way to connect BT keyboard to reMarkable. Is it possible to do it with other brands? How would they perform? As you might imagine my Note S goes well in typing thanks to the A2 mode. Are other brands allowing typing in A2 too? I hope you'd like to look into that as some of us, your viewers, are professional authors and like e-ink devices as pure typewriters. Again thanks for your wonderful work in reviewing e-readers!

Hey Voya, I just received the Onyx Boox Max 3 and I also tried the OTG and power functionality on a Lenovo 6 port USB 3, with HDMI and SD card support. It did not appear to work, but after plugging it in with a different orientation, it works. I know it sounds strange, thinking that USB-C is non-directional, but it appears that it is directional, even on my Macbook. I think you will be pleasantly surprised that it works. It is kind of counter-intuitive since my hub now sits upsidedown.

Awesome detailed review! Question: have you tried the pen functionality while in monitor mode? The reason I'm asking is because I use an only-windows app on my surface pro 4 called Drawboard pdf to write my music sheet that would not work on Android. I've been wondering for a while if the Onyx would be able to retain all its pen features - pressure sensitivity, eraser and so on, even when in monitor mode. Great job you're the man!
@DerHeilendeLotus

No, unfortunately it does not relay to touch information back to the host computer - it just behaves like a monitor with no touch functionality. In theory they could put out a software update that could allow it to behave as a usb input device when connected to the computer over USB, but I doubt that would happen any time soon if ever. Even on the device itself the only app that provides good drawing capability is the built in one - other apps don't use the hardware acceleration (?) fully and thus drawing feels a bit laggy.

Hello! I recently bought a Max 3 eink device after watching tons of videos. First of all, what a brilliant platform this is, I've enjoyed watching your various reviews with the greatest pleasure, I think your approach is absolutely fantastic, professional and very clever. Now as for my question: I'm a teacher on a high school and I would love to start using my Max 3 for my lectures by writing my formulae etc. in the build-in Note app and mirroring them onto my laptop (macbook), which I will in turn project on a larger apple tv in the classroom. And in times of a possible lock down, mirroring the max 3 onto my laptop and presenting this through google meet hangouts would also be fantastic. I'm very surprised that there is not yet a build-in option or app that does this. I searched the internet for solutions, but they are nowhere near what I would like to have. Do you know of any solution to this issue? Or do you have some idea of whether this functionality will be implemented in the near future? Thanks for your time in advance! Cheers, Sander

Hello Sander, Thank you very much for your kindness and words and for the support! It really means a lot :) As for your question, I am actually looking into that solution as well. There as some half-solutions (Chrome Remote Desktop), but none so far work as a complete solution, which I really find strange, because it's a functionality that really is needed for devices like these, especially for educational purposes. I am pretty sure that there are options out there, buy as I said, I'm in the process of researching and testing various solutions, trying to find the best one :) When I do know more, I will be making a video to share my findings with people :)

With the slow refresh nature of an e-ink display, I don't think we can notice the difference in the lag, as the bottleneck will always be the e-ink display refresh speed. But yes, I have tried it and it worked fine. I wasn't timing or comparing the two, but it seems a little more direct.

Your laptop has both an Intel 5500 discrete GPU and a dedicated GeForce 840M, both of which are technically capable of 4K and above. 2 things can limit your output resolution: 1. Cheap HDMI ports that don't allow resolution higher than 1920x1080. 2. HDMI cable of a standard less than HDMI 1.4. I would advise to bring your laptop to a friend or somewhere where you will have access to a 1440p (2560x1440) or 2160p (3840x2160) monitor, hook up your laptop and see what you get. Try more than one HDMI cable, to be sure. If you can't get it to move past 1080p (1920x1080) then the limitation is most likely in the laptop port itself, and then there's nothing you can do. As for the spacedesk app, I have no idea. It's free, so just try it and see for yourself :) Good luck!

Have you tried to highlight parts of texts in a word processor? Lag can be an important factor here: 'cause we don't want to highlight more or less but the exact words, sentences.
@MyDeepGuide
4 жыл бұрын
I come from an older generation of users, so I use keyboard for 95% of operations, shortcuts, including text highlighting. So, for me, it wasn't anything I noticed as I know exactly how many words/rows I want to highlight and I have direct control over that via the keyboard. This is how I have been using it for 25 years, so it's a hard habit to break. That being said, I would imagine that the highlighting with mouse could be a slow and painful experience, because of the slow refresh rate, but I find it slow and painful on regular displays, so what do I know :) To sum up, the way I am using it, no I haven't noticed any problems, but I see how it could be for other users.
