Thanks a lot, Toni! When I buy a piece like this I know there’s no real guarantee that there isn’t a lot of damage being hidden under the paint, but usually I find that there isn’t. When this was made, the pattern was designed to be replicated for many lock bodies. There was probably some fettling with tools to get it to sit correctly and operate as expected. No-one back then would have suspected that decades after it was made, that the original beauty would be restored. Thank you.

@jamesmoe9188

Hello again! I really enjoyed watching this piece, as I find old school icebox refrigerators fascinating. Once again, it is difficult to find constructive feedback for you. You've reached a point where the major limiting factor for you is equipment. For a specific example, the rear cover for the latch presumably fit its opening perfectly, or nearly so, when it was manufactured, and has lost significant material to rust in the intervening decades. You could weld additional material to that plate and make it a perfect fit, to elevate the project further, and likewise for the worn brass, but that's a serious hardware and materials investment for a minimal return on quality. I really feel that both your skills and instincts have become top notch, not only from a functional standpoint, but an aesthetic one as well. As always, I look forward to future projects, and thank you for sharing your art with us.
@randomrestoration6858
3 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the late reply, but as always, thanks a lot, James! I totally agree, the biggest limitation right now is a lack of additional tools. A welding setup would be a great addition, as well as a lathe. There have been a number of times that parts have been worn enough to warrant machining a new one, and it would have been great to get them replaced! I really appreciate all the kind words! I have another very cool (and this time broken) 1880s-1890s ornate lockset coming up in a couple videos, and is shaping up to be a great restoration, and has been great fun too. Thanks for watching!

Lovely restoration. And I know this is an old lock but the simplicity of the mechanism surprised me. It's just a latch with a simple item to hold the latch in place. Yes it was for an ice box so not a lot of security was needed even back then (it was more to ensure the door stayed tight to keep the ice from melting). Still I expected just a touch more. Nice surprise

Iam sure there’s something we all don’t know about this guy. At the moment you could recognize the 'face' on this lock, every animal outside totally freaked out. Like some sort of demon animal portal which was reactivated by the restoration. Maybe the 'icebox' he’s talking about is some sort of the underworld he’s trying to open. So in my opinion a perfect restoration, cause the animals told us it all worked perfectly fine. Hugs from Germany bro! 🙂
