Hiya. Don't get overwhelmed with the work to be done. One step at a time. Buy yourself books on stone buildings, lime rendering, kitchens, roofs etc. English editions are good. Go on courses if u can afford it. 😊

Amazing ideas for your project! We're looking forward watching you make them happen! Take your time and start from small preparations you have to do while looking for builders who can help you with the bigger tasks. Also make sure that you'll start with your roof when weather gets warmer and dryer. Why don't you start arranging and decorating a temporary space in the basement while you're waiting for the weather to get better? This way you'll have a place to sleep during your roof replacement. Also you can think of a temporary kitchen setup. And perhaps start moving things from your home to your studio (building some temporary shelves there with what wood you already have, in order to put everything in an easy-to-find way)? This way you'll have your home ready for the roof replacement.

Thanks for your comment. That's a good idea. We're still figuring out the logistics of the roof, since the builders are not available before mid 2025 and we want to keep going. Lately we have been thinking of maybe doing parts of the roof ourselves and then we'll definitely live in the downstairs area, whilst replacing the roof. We can probably move parts of the kitchen downstairs and fairly easily connect it to the plumbing there. We're still planning, so let's see what we decide on 😀

I agree with you keeping a guest room, because I think bathrooms really don’t need to be big, and it is nice to have a comfy place for guests to stay. I also love smaller bathrooms. Much easier to keep clean, keep warm.

Hola! Descubrí hace poco vuestro canal y me gusta mucho!

Love following you both and your brave adventure in the mountains. I’m really interested in all the restrictions there are with renovating a cabin in Cantabria. You mentioned things like not being able to add new windows for example but can you enlarge existing windows? What are some of the things to watch out for when choosing a house/cabin in Cantabria. Maybe you could add this to your next Q&A chat?
@WaleandMe

Hi Sean. There's so much to say on that topic, but we'd be happy to include it in a future Q&A if it's interesting. Just to give you a small preview: the issue starts when changing the status of a house/cabin from agricultural to dwelling. The buildings in this area of Cantabria, known as cabañas pasiegas, are highly protected. This means that even though they can be renovated, and the status thus changed, there is a whole autonomic department in charge of reviewing any renovation plans whose approval is paramount. They are known for being inconsistent, difficult to please and extremely slow. Although the exact requirement are murky, you're basically guaranteed issues if you try to include bigger windows and useful things like gutters. The shape, location and size (can increase 20%) should remain. So if you choose to buy un-renovated cabañas, you're looking at a long and frustrating permit process ahead of you. If instead you choose to buy an already renovated home, you can avoid yourself a lot of these struggles, but you'll probably have to deal with constructions that are unlikely to be comfortable for long term living (most places have been fixed up to be vacational rentals). Any major renovations that include things like increasing all the window sizes will have to go back to that same agency and are therefore usually avoided. Hope this info is useful!

Really nice design, so super efficient with a small space. it’s also not easy to show a design in a video but was super clear! I really like the new bigger kitchen, I think with the long kitchen and the built in pantry space, (plus all the storage you have downstairs) you might not need the top kitchen cupboards as well - with your low ceiling height it might look more minimal without cupboards and just a shelf. Similar to the look you have in the entrance.

Search for a trade school in your area. There are a chance they will be open to give their students an opportunity to work in a field job. Worst scenario they say no.

Have you looked at how Martijn Doolaard restored his roof. It is not necessarily beyond you if you have help. Similarly raising the door should be possible. KZitem will show you how, Doing bits increases your confidence. You need to invest in good tools - also for the garden. Have you considered painting the beams white. This will increase the impression of height/light and reduce the rustic feel. Would guests not prefer the. Space being downstairs would give. Friends may come in the summer when being downstairs would be an advantage. Would the plans for the bathroom allow for noise privacy for guests? I’m not keen on the aesthetics of cupboards built around/pver the bed, however, it adds storage to a small bedroom. Could you add another quality shed to store tools, bikes etc thus freeing up the space downstairs. Do you have any friends from Belgium/Netherlands who could come and work for the summer?
@WaleandMe

Hey John, thanks for all the tips. We'll definitely get better tools and will look into different options as to how we can get the work started on our own. And we'll continue developing the design to our needs and preferences. We cannot add additional structures on the land, since that's not allowed in this area, so the downstairs storage and layout is crucial to us. Also, there is only one windows downstairs, which doesn't make it optimal for living. Thanks again for all the interest (also on the other videos) ❤

The plan of the upper floor is interesting. I like the kitchen on the left side. But I don`t like the bathroom and the very tiny diningspace. Why do you realy need the second bedroom upstairs? If you would have a little bathroom there, you could have a bigger bedroom. Also much more space for the dining- / workingtable. Also the big room of the old house would look much nicer. The bathroom is disturbing the feeling of the whole room. Sorry, but my englisch is very bad. Can not explain it. The plan for downstairs is perfekt!

6:20 as I wrote in previous episodes if you had only one bedroom on this floor you would have a hole world to design from not knowing what you're doing with the extra bedroom in the lower level I don't know if this is a possibility just saying!
