The day after a 4 day long blizzard came off Lake Superior, blowing snow, wind and waves straight down the canal. Apparently that ice and snow clogged up the horns on the Lift Bridge. The result? One of the most hilarious sounds I’ve ever heard it make 😂. Mesabi Miner’s first trip out of layup and she arrives with a very rare (for her) Master’s Salute! Sadly things didn’t quite go as expected. The horns are all packed with snow and ice! It took her several seconds to warm up her horn properly, fortunately she sounded wonderful, almost musical! As for the bridge response… well, the less said the better 😂😂.
Mesabi Miner measures 1004ft long, and is one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes. While perhaps lacking the worldwide following and popularity of her sisters James R Barker and Paul R Tregutha, she is one of the most popular vessels locally, being named in honor of the local miners and dock workers who make it all possible. A rare and significant gesture back when the ship was built in the late 70s, and one Duluth has never forgotten. Despite the bitter cold, terrible road conditions and cutting wind, the lighthouse parking lot was nearly full, a nice sized crowd lined the piers to greet her home, the largest crowd I’ve seen here in the winter outside of the Bentleyville Festival. Remarkable, given the fairly extreme conditions. She arrived on 3/27/24 for iron ore pellets at the CN6 ore dock in west Duluth. At anchor behind her, hidden in the storm are James R Barker and CSL Assiniboine, both waiting for Two Harbors. The blizzard that had lasted four days was just starting to clear out, about an inch more snow is expected before it finally moves on. The strong, bitter winds continue, now coming from the hillside rather than the lake, meaning the lake isn’t getting stirred up as much on this end. Her arrival was delayed for several days due to the weather. Getting the car out to see her was a significant challenge, but a necessary one if I intend to work tomorrow!
