Great tutorial Chris! Many thanks! We corresponded over Strava as well about the Ultrafly (which I have now sadly left in pursuit of something else, perhaps the Endorphin Rift or Xodus Ultra 2. Anyways, I have had the exact same experience as you, coming into running from Born2Run, love the Lunas (in summer 😅) But recently got PF issues, why? I have been doing most long and easy runs in Invicible 2’s… all your relief remedies I can attest to, thanks! Keep up the great work!

I got a mild case of it years ago. Using low stack flexible shoes with little or no rocker seems to keep it at bay. I also trail run once a week

Both of those things work the arches and calves naturally which build strength and mobility… two things that will counter PF. 💪🏻

Funny I usually never get plantar pain when I am running in the trails but I get it quite often on the road. I do caution on road running shoe especially the max cushion ones. All my trail shoe are quite low stack height as I like to feel the floor and allows me to adjust. My vibram fivefinger were one of my favourite. I thinkk my plantar issue is different to yours. Great content

Trail running is much more dynamic and works the feet legs much harder. So that makes sense. Max cushion shoes are ok in small doses… but not daily (IMO). For many many reasons. Thank you for the support!

When my PF was bad I depended on some slides to make it around the house. However, now that it’s been come for over a year… I’m barefoot maybe 90% of my day… unless I’m outside in running shoes or out and about.

I had horrific PF after training all wrong for my first marathon - including running in leather court shoes for half the training. I ended up seeing two different podiatrists and having prescription orthotics in my running and work shoes. And being told to run in the Brooks Beast - which is like running in Doc Martens. Podiatrist #2 was somewhat of an improvement and had me to dial back to Kayanos with a different custom orthotic. It really meant that my running was heavily curtailed and marathons were really off the table unless I wanted to endure a lot of chronic pain. But it was never fully fixed until I read Born to Run while living as an expat in Zimbabwe and was inspired to work on my form - retraining myself to midfoot striking. I would say within a month the entire years long chronic problem was reversed. And I was able to regularly run half marathon distances, complete a couple of 20-milers, two full marathons, and the Two Oceans Ultra marathon that year. The podiatrists had it all wrong. It wasn’t about the orthotics after an acute period. It was about foot strengthening and running technique.

Sadly, most western Doctors… or anything involving health… is more about prescribing a “fix” instead of addressing the underlying problems long term. It’s so frustrating to read all your account, I’ve seen it so many times in the running space.

I had it on my left foot for years. I changed my foot strike to midfoot/forefoot from heel strike. The change cured 99% of my plantar fasciitis. Sometimes it comes back for a while usually after a night’s sleep.

Great insights, much appreciate you sharing this. Would love to hear your insights into other common running injuries, assuming you struggled with any over the years. As a heel striker, I'm also keen to learn how you changed your foot strike to forefoot. Thanks Sagasu Running.

PF is really the only thing I have suffered with over the years besides Hallux Limitus, which I also addressed in this video. Luckily, I haven’t had to deal with anything else besides normal soreness from over training or changing things too fast. Maybe I’ll make a video about how I transitioned from heel striking to forefoot striking. Sadly, it was far from ideal. My next podcast (or the one after the next one) will be about my background with barefoot running. I will get into that story there, but more long form. I will say… the book “Botn to Run 2” is worth picking up if you want to learn how to run forefoot. Eric Orton built a program in that book to train you on how to transition in the right way. It’s worth a look at least.

Great vid. Yeah i agree no cure all for every case. I had it bad for 2 yrs. For me, I attribute it to too much time in max cushion shoes. Now I use them sparingly, gotta race in Vapor Fly for now. Work the toes and feet like you say. Feet get lazy in all theses high tech shoes. I walk around in Altras that's seemed to help. Do toe exercises through out the day & when u run concentrate on splaying & digging in toes when doing ez miles. I did night boot some too & homemade spacers. But yeah gotta search for a cure on PF.

Interesting. I’ve talked to a few people that have had bad PF in the past few years and the common thread is lots of time in max cushion shoes, the super soft type. I don’t consider a Vaporfly a max cushion shoe. I know it is technically… but it’s still got alot of “feel” to it, which is odd to say given it’s a CF shoe. But compared to an Adios Pro e or Sky+ it’s soft and flexible. It sounds as if you figured out your own issues… which is ultimately the way to solve PF. Look at your own running and figure out what is the trigger!

Yeah, I had PF when running in the Cumulus-25, all those years my foot was fine running using the Pegs and Streakfly, but then got PF on my left foot once I used the Cumulus, sold the shoe, going back to Pegs and now maybe looking into Vaporfly or Zoomfly for the long runs. Still nursing the PF tho, currently applying your techniques here.

@@eby61mss Big sudden changes in shoes definitely can trigger PF. I learned the hard way. It’s another reason I try to rotate a range of shoes, foams and drops in my weekly running.

I just stumbled upon squat university channel reels about Plantar Fasciitis…it echoes the same idea in spreading your toes as a way to relax and open the circulation toward the plantar fascia…as a cyclist that has just returned to running regularly for 3 months, the plantar fasciitis got me..I think wearing stiff carbon plated cycling shoe has weakened my foot muscle and ligaments.. I wonder what do you think about Altra shoes..would they remedy the situation
@SagasuRunning

I came from cycling as well. Yes, those super stiff Sidis definitely don’t build foot strength. 😂 I also come from barefoot running. It. It builds foot strength but it takes time. I’m not a huge fan of Altras. There are better zero drop/barefoot options (Topos).

About 3 months to be back to “normal” (no pain or discomfort in the morning/walking or running/post run).
