This is my GL Racing GLR-GT. It's gotten quite a number of modifications and it's a great track car. The rear ball differential, one of the most important components, is the stock one built from the kit. It's a good diff. The quality of construction is good with little play. The pressure plates are flat, and the differential action is very smooth. Let's improve it further with this PN Racing 53T spur gear (MR2953WC).
So why change it when it's already pretty good? The reason is serviceability. The PN spur gear will make it easier to do maintenance. I will explain shortly.
The GLR-GT diff contains 10 diff balls inside. That's a good amount to allow for a loose setup without slipping easily. Disassembling a ball diff likes this requires removing a pesky e-clip. I must say I've gotten good at using the Mini-Z tool.
Unlike the GL spur gear, the PN one requires a central 4x7x2 ball bearing, which I purchased separately. I'm also taking this opportunity to put in fresh 2.381mm balls.
Because of the central bearing, the spur gear itself and the outside pressure plate can be removed without touching the e-clip. This will make this ball diff easier to service in the future.
The PN spur gear has an additional feature; notice six of the holes are eccentrically shaped? When balls are used there, accelerating the gear in one direction will lock the balls in place, stiffening the diff action. This is an interesting tuning option, and it's also directional. In the forward direction, tightening the action reduces power loss. There are multiple possible configurations. I'm going to use all 12 balls for less overall slip, and for powering out of corners.
I'm making this video to also confirm that this model of the PN spur gear is compatible with the GLR-GT diff.
Changing the spur gear ended up a pretty straightforward process. Everything fits and works. The diff action remains very smooth. It's easy to adjust the amount of diff pressure.
The yellow color stands out and doesn't really match the rest of the chassis, but it's growing on me. PN picked a bright color because this is the official spec spur gear for the PNWC Super Stock class. Now you are not going to find me at a PNWC of course. I installed this so I can clean the diff more easily next time.
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!
