Another question Gungeek, what's your favorite smoked Kipper? Mine so far has been Polar smoked kippers in water. Perfect amount of smoke. No wacky additives.

You make a good point - not just eating the fish but also whatever it's packed in. I guess a component of the taste must come from the oil or other fillers.

soya oil does kinda work with some cans, i had smoked sardines in soya oil and it worked well there, not over powering the smoke flavour :)
