One important thing that many beginners like me tend to miss: Keeping ankle under tension and dorsiflexing. Fix: Keep ankle floppy and fire hamstrings only.

I'm happy I found out about pose running and I hope I can finally run faster and longer with this. I used to do quite bad in running, except on the treadmill!

Peter, thank you. Dr. Romanov obviously has a different point of view. He teaches that hamstrings are more suited for such action. The recovery of the trailing leg is faster and more effective when it's done by larger hamstrings, which also helps prevent hip overuse injuries.

I am quite in line with the emphasis on good posture, midfoot striking and not overstriding, which you find in Evolution Running, Chi Running etc. as well as Pose. But the problem I have with the clip is that if you watch the runners during the slow-mo part, you can see that they are not pulling their feet up under their hips at all, their feet are clearly rising up behind them. So is the 'pose' more about how it should feel to you when running, than about how it looks to an observer?

Breathe through your nose, the noise moistens and warms the air, you may breathe out through your mouth. When you get tired however, you may find it impossible to breathe in through your nose and that's all right. PS: The oxygen in moist air is absorbed better by the lungs than dry air.

Hello, I disagree with the person who told you that the technique was only for decent runners, with this technique you can run from 3 mph to 20 mph the speed depends on how you bend your upper body and stride lenght and obviously how fast you do it will give you the speed. Remeber when you run always to have your feet under the body mass and you can run any speed your body at the moment is capable of

@JoeCavy4 Efficient running learned via Pose method is not just about buying minimalistic shoes and hit the road. You got the understand the Pose concept which is all about understanding the forces acting upon the body when running and how to deal with them in the smartest way. About how to prepare your feet, core etc. and about developing correct perceptions of movement. Popular easy made statements like; "land forefoot", or "take of your shoes and run", won't work for most of us. Happy running

Nice on RW! Nowadays, as a response to the barefoot- and the more natural (minimalistic) running hype, lots of new methods are invented and marketed. The pose method of running (although not too busy with smart marketing), has been telling about the benefits of barefoot running, minimalistic shoe wear, landing under the body (forefoot ) etc, etc. for óver 30 years. It has been ridiculed and ignored for years, but seems commonly accepted since the outcome of "Born to run" and the Lieberman study.

Actually, there are many different ways to breathe, but its all about finding the right method for you! Many people who start off do breathe with their mouths, and that is because with the amount of hard work they are putting in, they require more oxygen to their muscles. But once you have become a little more experienced of a runner, I would highly recommend trying Diaphragmatic Breathing, which is- in essence- nose breathing.

I doubt the validity of these claims. Pose running may reduce power loads in the knee but simply transfers it to the ankle, increases the frequency and concentric work load, thus straining the tibialis anterior. Would like to see the effect of pose running on shin splints incidence.

@lazydullard Funny you should say that. I find this method difficult to use slowly. You have to be a decent runner to really apply this method as it requires a bit of spee dto execute. You need to be a decent runner to run with this method. It is not very user friendly for those jogging slow trying to build up endurance and shed a few

I live on Sydney's Lower Nth Shore and there's hills in every direction. How can you run hills using the Pose method. Say a 1:5 to 1:6 slope. Especially the descent. Can't wait to try it out in Centennial park on a flat run to try and get the technique to work. If I could run a sub-40 10km off the bike, I'd be ecstatic.

Its not in essence "nose breathing". Its in essence breathing with your diaphram instead of your chest. When a runner uses his/her chest to breathe, the eventual fatigue will cause the runner to slump forward with a rounded upper back. Obviously this leads to decreased efficiency in running.

@MsChoppercity I have read Pirie's book, I think that is enough to form an educated opinion, if not a flawless one. You are right though in the sense that I refuse to invest time into Pose running (or Chi Running, or Evolution running). The sheer fact that there are now numerous running 'schools' that all claim to have the key to perfect, injury free running form (while selling pricey DVDs and workshops) makes their claim not credible. And, of course, I do run myself.

@funknup I totally agree that running is not Religion. Glad we share something in common ;-). It's okay to disagree, happens often.

@funknup Please don't mention the Newton business together with Pose. Newton shoes and all else they are doing (like their natural running transition program), is all about the marketing and selling of shoes. When you look at the (original) Newton shoes there's nothing what makes the foot and running gait act naturally because of that. It has nothing to do with pose and is not even comparable to what pose stands for. I do realize your advice is well meant though, but just want that to be clear.
