Have you thought about using a couple of layers of carbon fibre as the "show" layers? I know it costs a lot more, but I have seen some really cool paint effects you can do with carbon underneath (or just leave it raw)

For the finished product on this car I want it to look like without the body kit it could have been an OEM build. I'm going to be painting the whole car once it's complete and getting an exact match for the colour I want over the top of carbon like you'll see on vehicles like the Active Carbon GTRs would be a bit tricky so I'll likely stick with fiberglass

you do an amazing job!! How to make the resin not dry so fast and you can work with the roller?
@TofuAutoWorks
Жыл бұрын
If your resin is curing on you too quick, try dropping your catalyst rate to 1.2 or 1%. Also mixing it in smaller batches will keep it cooler in the pot. If I mix more than say 800ml I'll typically pour half of it into another pot as two batches of 400ml will set in the pot a lot slower than a single 800ml

Amazing as always... you have inspired me to make some fg panels for a bike that I have spent too long looking for spare panels... I would like to make the mould but without wrecking the originals.. I don't mind drilling holes to brace them onto some wood to make the plug, what do u use to smooth off the edges? Some kind of putty? Blue tac? Lol What are you putting on at 22.30? Thanks
@TofuAutoWorks
Жыл бұрын
I'd recommend checking out my previous videos on making the fender moulds for more detailed info. For yours I would suggest using hot glue to fix your bracing, and then to smooth edges between your part and flanges you can use filleting wax or plasticine. A good coat of PVA over your plugs should protect them and the filleting wax should all come off without any damage.

Easier to apply filler and sand over a rigid fiberglass plug than deal with the plastic moving around on me. Since this mould was only going to be used once it didn't matter if the body work happened before or after.

@@TofuAutoWorks What is the 80 gsm tissue normally used for? What is the rational for using it as the first layer? Thanks !
@TofuAutoWorks
Жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this one. The 80gsm tissue is a very fine layer that will contour quite well to most curves, but most importantly it will block print through of the more coarse fiberglass texture from the following layers. If you go straight to 225 as your first layer, often you will see a faint fiberglass texture through your gelcoat on the surface of your finished part. This doesn't matter so much on produced parts as they will always be sanded before paint, but with moulds you like to get the surface as clean as possible.

So those wheels were made in Japan then shipped to the UK so that they could be sent to NZ? That seems inefficient.
@TofuAutoWorks
Жыл бұрын
Yup, welcome to New Zealand. On their trip the wheels travelled from UK to Belgium, then Dubai, then Singapore before finally landing in NZ, where they were driven past my address to a depot 2 hours north, before the courier picked them up to deliver them back to me (after they were lost for 3 weeks). These wheels have seen more of the world than I have.

Awesome work man, looking very cool! I'm always waiting for your new videos =) greetings from russia p.s. Will there be an increased load on wheel bearings with such wide discs?
@TofuAutoWorks
Жыл бұрын
Thanks man. The offset on these is 19x10.5 et-13 factoring in the spacer. It's a bit more negative but because they're so much wider, the center of the wheel is still pretty close to the center of the hub so there wont be any significant increase in bearing wear. Not like on my Mx5 that is 15x10 et-50 which is a lot worse.

When ordering these wheels we looked at all of the Works distributors. Since Driftworks are an official Works Wheels supplier, when I ordered through them we were initially going to have these wheels sent directly from the Japanese distributor, but the UK warehouse happened to have one last set in stock and I was able to get that even faster. All of this for significantly cheaper than trying to buy locally, and I got the exact size and style I wanted.
