Classic Rock fans in general seem to forget that Journey already released three albums before Steve Perry joined. Greg Rollie was doing the vocals back then. None of these are weak albums, but by far 'Next' is the best IMO. In fact, it has four of my all-time Journey favourites that can stand next to the best material of their later career. 'Hustler" is savage and very fast, like it's one of Hard Rock's early assists to the Metal genre in creating Speed Metal. 'Spaceman' is a smooth and beautiful Classic Rock track with strong, soothing yet somewhat melancholic sounding vocal melodies. 'I will find you' sounds dramatic and with its slow pace and its rather dark atmosphere and quite heavy sounding guitars, it even has proto-Doom tendencies. 'Nickel and a Dime' is a captivating, energetic instrumental with strong guitar riffs and stellar performances from all musicians, something to be admired both from a technical as well as aesthetic standpoint. And throughout the entire album Rollie, while not having a voice as distinct as Perry's (then again, who has?), proves to be a good vocalist.

At the time I was a huge hard rock and metal fan, I was coming out of a phase where I had been listening to metal non stop from age 14-24. I remember hearing "Edge of the blade" on a rock radio station here in the UK, and I was pretty blown away because I didn't know Journey rocked that hard and hadn't really paid much attention to them outside of a couple of big hits that I knew. Now I'm very much into Journey. Does anybody else have a similar story?

saw journey in central park around the time of 'look into the future'...it was a daytime gig and it was cool, although i've never been a big journey fan...however having said that, i think their current lead singer does a fantastic job and you did a tremendous job describing each and every album...very well done my friend...peace always...rocky

The third one Next is the one. First three are great. I love the jazz rock. If I had only known it in the past. I play a good blues guitar and that sound is what makes me happy.

1. Journey 2. Next 3. Look Into the Future Story time, 1977 Oakland Coliseum, Concert: ELP and Journey. Had just seen Journey earlier in the year at the Santa Monica Civic with Styx as the back up band. Journey just kicked ass. FF to Oakland. We are all pumped up for this concert. Journey comes on and plays I think Of a Lifetime and maybe one other song. Then someone says "I'd like to introduce are new singer ... don't know who, thought it was steve perry but I think it was a singer before him that was with the band for a short time. anyway, The crowd goes silent. We are looking at each other saying WTF? Then they start playing all this pop crap. The fans and us are going nuts booing and yelling. In between one of the songs a loud voice yelled out what everyone was thinking "F*&^ You Journey" They were boo'd off the stage. At least Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were outstanding. All the seats behind the stage had not been sold. So me and a friend went to a couple seats in back of the stage. Karl Palmer's drum set was pretty high up. We sat maybe 20ft from Karl at the same level for a while listening and watching him tear it up. They were actually quit good seats we could see everything and the speakers were close so we did not get the dreaded coliseum echo. It was awesome.

Journey before Steve Perry is rock solid, with Perry is my favorite era, and post Perry is actually good. For me growing up with the Perry era is what makes the band so any of those albums!!

been a Journey fan since the 70's and I am not ashamed... Pete, you are so correct in the fact that when people say Journey sucks, it's because they have never heard the vast majority of the songs the band has...

Not a surprise that your #1 was the Infinity album. I totally agree with your pick. At the age of 15, the first rock concert I ever attended was Journey in 1979 in Toledo, OH. It was their Evolution tour and they rocked most songs from the Infinity & Evolution albums. I wore my Evolution T-shirts so much back then. It was the coolest shirt I ever had. I lost some interest in the future Journey songs when they went all out with their commercial songs which did prove very successful for them. If I would have ever found a chick who loved those Journey love ballads, I probably would have stayed true to the band. Even though I have every album, I find my most used set is the Times3 box set. No doubt Journey will always hold a special place in my rock music heart/memory since that was my first concert experience.

Pete, very timely list today as it is Neal Schon's birthday when this was posted. Your bottom of the list would match mine. I probably would have put "Raised on Radio" at the bottom and my main reason was that Steve Perry had fired the rhythm section of Valory and Smith for the recording of the album and Steve Smith is one of my all-time favorite drummers. "Trial by Fire" starts off strong and then fizzles from all the songs. The "Revelation" album as Arnel's debut is such a great album. As a 80's teenager, the "Escape" and "Frontiers" albums are very special to me. I love how you placed "Infinity" as your #1. When I saw that it was Neal Schon's birthday today, I decided to listen to some Journey music and I went to "Infinity" first mostly because of "Feeling that Way" and into "Anytime" Great video. Thanks Pete.

I worked for Journey. Many albums recorded at the record plant in Sausalito , many recorded at Jonathan Cain's. Home studio. The band never spent a great deal of time in the studio.Often the band would lay down two tracks in a 8 HR session. Not much debate during studio sessions.New drum skins every morning 10am. Photo sessions were just all jump in 2 cars with Photographer and the Photographer would just pics locations and all would jump out And snap -snap done. Very professional group of friends.

Although our rankings differ, an excellent overview of the band's material. I would have also included "Dream after Dream", a rare but notable soundtrack album, released just prior to Escape. It's by far one of the best Journey albums!

Escape is the album that no matter how I'm feeling good or bad after listening to the whole thing I feel better regardless. The music has stayed with me throughout my life. Never has music had such an effect on me or had such an impact on my life. Because of that I have to say it's my number 1 journey album.

@@ericwalker6068 the title track gets overlooked because of dont stop believing open arms and who's crying now. I love neils guitar at the end of who's crying now. Dont stop believing has lost a little bit in recent years because its overplayed. Stone in love is one of my favorites. I have to give a nod to dead or alive & lay it down. For people who think journey is a creamy pop band they should check those two songs out. Schon shreds

I'm one of those that only knows the Perry years. They were roller rink music when I was a teen so I didn't pursue further. That said, thanks to this, I will look into the older stuff now as I've always been a "B"side type of guy. Look forward to exploring them further, it will be new to me. Thanks for the video!!

My absolute favorite era of Journey is Infinity,Evolution and Departure. I NEVER get tired of hearing them. Then I discovered the first 3 Journey albums before Steve Perry and was blown away. No wonder it was Steve Perry’s dream to sing with this band. They were magical together. Been a MEGA fan for 40 years. I will love this band forever. The music they made together is timeless.
