In terms of writing, acting, and music score, Spectre of the Gun is my favorite season three episode. Great reaction today! Can't wait for your future reactions! ❤️

Yes. The camera work was outstanding. This was director Ralph Senensky(?)'s forth and final episode I believe. And at 102 years old the man is still alive. I'm not sure how well he gets around but he was a guest of another podcast a few months ago were we only heard his voice but he sounded very coherent and shared clear memories on the productions of his episodes. Season 2's Obsession being one of them.

A few minor inaccuracies in SPECTRE OF THE GUN. Morgan Earp was actually the youngest of the Earp brothers. He was about 28 at the time of the gunfight at the OK corral and Doc Holiday was about 30. Also, Holiday suffered from tuberculosis which resulted in a constant cough which actually caused him to give up dentistry and become a gunfighter.

The actress (Diana Muldaur) that seemed familiar to you, has not only appeared in another Star Trek episode, but 20 episodes of Star Trek: Next Generation (Dr. Pulaski). She also starred with John Saxon in Gene Roddenberry's TV pilot movie, "Planet Earth" in 1974. It was a very interesting pilot movie, but it did not become a series. Saxon played an astronaut awoken from cryogenic sleep after a few hundred years, Diana was queen of an Amazonian warrior race that enslaved men. Ted Cassidy (Lurch-Addams Family) co-starred. Cassidy has also appeared as a monstrous android in Star Trek.

Miranda's sensor web foreshadows Geordi's VISOR in TNG (Both are blind characters, but whereas McCoys tells Miranda that she can't pilot a starship, that is _exactly_ what Geordi will be doing almost 8 decades later.) Good catch on the fact that Kirk lingered in the transporter room without eye protection when Kollos was being beamed away. At the time there was a story published in one of the fanzines that tackled him going mad and how the crew dealt with it. I wish somebody could collect all the early fanfics and put them in an EPUB for future generations to read. As Spock might say, "It would be fascinating." Where the _Enterprise_ ends up as a result of Marvick's madness does reuse the sfx of the barrier at the edge of the galaxy, so most fans agree that it was intentional, so that is indeed where they were. Good thing there were no ESPers aboard this time, or it would have complicated matters even more. Their first entry caused systems on the ship to explode and catch fire. I like to believe that in the third year of their travels the upgrades they got prevented a repeat of that. As a personal sidenote, I started a website decades ago that was intended to be a fan fiction experiment. It was called _Timeship Atlantis._ The idea was to have a different ship and crew whose adventures would be written by visitors to the site. I bring this up because Kollos was one of the regular characters on the bridge, since only a Medusan could handle the intricate computations of precision time jumps. By this time, I had him ambling about inside an androidal shell. You might still be able to find TA stories floating around somewhere on the internet if you are curious enough do a search for them.

Spectre of the Gun has really grown on me over the years - the limited budgets might have kept them from going to some old west street on a back lot somewhere and the result is brilliantly simplistic. The stage-like partial sets, the music, everything just really comes together. And, to be clear, the Earps were no villains and the Clantons certainly weren't heroes or victims - it was a complicated situation. It's amazing that that otherwise forgettable 30-45 second shootout in a dusty, non-descript horse pen in a dusty, non-descript town has gained the life in culture that it has.

Great video, I hadn't seen either episode in many years! btw since you mentioned "the more you know", did you know that's the new title of NBC's educational stuff on saturday mornings? They have two shows during that time period, and one of them is Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom! I grew up watching the original from the 70s! I'm not old enough to have seen the original run, but I saw it in syndication in the late 80s. And now they are producing new episodes! One of the co-hosts was on the original show (although the main host from the original show has passed on), and the other co-host is a biologist, and happens to be a beautiful African-American woman! In each episode they take you somewhere in the USA or the world and explain wildlife conservation efforts going on! 🙂 The full name of the new show is "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild"!! It's broadcast for free on NBC on Saturdays at 8 AM!! Or if you have on demand service it should be one there! After that is "Earth Odyssey" but I haven't actually watched that one yet. 🙂

The diplomat in this first episode must have gone to the same irritating diplomacy school as the woman from "Metamorphosis." The two episodes have similarities, in that there is an energy being that merges with a person. Those two episodes had different writers, but shared the same director - Ralph Senensky - who did five other episodes. As for the second episode, to me it is reminiscent of the movie "The Matrix" as well as "Tombstone." No spoilers of course. But both movies are classics and high on the list of must-see cinema. "Tombstone" is a good introduction to westerns for those not familiar with the genre.

Having read the transcript of the inquiry that was held following this gunfight, it sometimes irritates me that so many movies and television shows depict this event so inaccurately. The Earps walked down the street with their guns drawn, stopped within 10 feet of the Clantons and opened fire without warning. Ike and Billy Claiborne were unarmed. I was impressed that Billy Clanton got his gun out in time to put bullets into Doc Holiday and Morgan Earp before he died.

3:08 "I was just noticing your Vulcan IDIC, Mr. Spock." It's a curious note of trivia that would seem to contrast with the Vulcan disapproval of illogic. What she refers to as a "Vulcan IDIC" is more accurately described as a Vulcan IDIC _symbol_ that expresses the Vulcan cultural appreciation of diversity; a key reason they were one of the inaugural races of the Federation; an organization dedicated to _exploring_ diversity. "IDIC" stands for "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations."

Diana Muldaur shows up as a guest star in just about everything until she hit the big time in the '80s show LA Law after which she moved away from acting. She is one of numerous actors who comes back to Trek as an entirely different character. Gunfight at the OK Corral was very famous until the '90s when it abruptly faded out of popular culture. Everyone in the '60s would have been familiar with the myths, legends and impossible sounding facts surrounding it. Everyone had an opinion and no one knows the truth. There have been multiple hit movies on the subject, the last being the excellent Tombstone from '93, and it got touched on in many TV shows. The events of Tombstone are most accurately described as two semi-criminal gangs (lead by the Clanton and Earp families) fighting over an election to the office of territorial Marshal which came with a cut of all silver production in the territory. Worth hundreds of millions adjusted for inflation. Either side can be cast as the heroes or villains and in the '60s it was trending that the Clantons were the good guys, but by the '90s it was the Earps who were depicted as the side of law and order. It's a rabbit hole to look into.

With regards to _Spectre of the Gun,_ it's rather curious that Chekov demonstrated _real_ feelings for a girl he knew wasn't real, that he knew there was no way he could possibly have a _future_ with. But then it's _also_ curious that Kirk said they were under orders to make contact with the Melkotians at all _costs._ Really? _All_ costs? The Melkotians demonstrated traits of _xenophobia._ How urgent can first contact really be? If another race _tells_ you, _straight out_ that they _don't want_ contact, how inflexible are you allowed to be on this point? They want to be left alone, leave 'em alone.

At this period, the railroads were advanced enough to bring floods of easterners to the west as tourists, seeking the mythical wild west that they had read about. But there were no gunfights. Boring. Then this ok corral thing happened, not a classic western draw, but what the heck. Tourists abd reporters rushed to Tombstone, turning it into a circus, ,a mountain from a molehill.
