Hey Paul, thanks for this video. I have a type C that I bought back in 87? Never used it much so its just sat in my junk room waiting to be sold...until....I saw this video by Paul Third comparing the hardware with the software. Well, Ive just thrown it back into my rack where its gonna stay. Great video sir. Thanks for the comparison.

Thanks for the demo. In my experience digital becomes competitive with hardware with the right converter. For example the UA SSL E came alive, sounds huge and amazing on my Apollo x6 where before it wasn't a go to. Back to Exciter. I own a hardware exciter myself and while I recommend it Paul Third is right hardware takes more time to find a sound.
@PaulThird

I think whatever is in the exciter's DNA must be very hard to recreate in the digital realm. I enjoyed crafting sounds with the hardware where the type B plugin was just a bit tedious to work with and kind of took the fun out of the experimentation process for me. Just too work in the audiothing to get it to sound half decent to what the hardware does in like 40 secs to a minute

This is supposed to be used as send / return so the Waves AX should be used at position AX and not MIX1. If you use it at AX then the AX Mix knob is disabled since you are listening to just the wet signal. But I see the Type C has a mix knob! I own both plugins and have calibrated the settings of Type B to sound more like Waves AX. If you are interested let me know and I will send you the settings.
@PaulThird
3 жыл бұрын
I got confused with the waves as it states MIX1, as an insert, recreates the hardware unit’s AX mode send/return sound. I had it set to 10 in all examples anyway haha In terms of the type B I used it the exact same as the hardware as it also has a mix knob. Tbh I don't want to see the type B ever again 😂 it genuinely gave me that much of a sore head from the demo cutting out every 30 seconds to trying to get the tune frequencies closish, then the emphasis for the resonance and then tweaking the drive.. Absolute pain in the hoop! Haha

@@PaulThird i feel you about the type B. I had to calibrate it carefully using Bertom EQ Curve Analyzer and VU meters and test tones etc to match it with the Waves AX. So many knobs it has, just brings chaos. So i found one setting and thats it.
@danoakgrove

Exactly! Just check in plugindoctor and you'll see even if you have the mix knob all the way up in MIX 1 mode you have a difference frequency response than in AX mode. The AX Mode is way brighter like the hardware

Adds something on the right source, but VERY easy to abuse. The plugins aren't bad, but if you really want the hardware, at the prices they're going for they're even as cheap as a plugin. I liked it across the mix actually, on this track it did something the plugins just couldn't do. Cheers

Totally. I've got it up on ebay. Bids starting at £50. It was £300 in the 80's. Dunno what that would be equivalent to in today's money but I imagine it was a fair skelp in the 80's. My mission is now to find plugins that can recreate it as I need that effect on my guitars haha 😅

The plugs cant get close to the highs and whatever phase shifting it does. Honestly the drive in the plugs is almost non existent. What interests me though is that doesn't really translate as much in lower quality speakers. Must be cause its more high end based. On my headphones it's so apparent to me but on the TV or phone it's less apparent

Thanks for the video. Have you tried using this on double tracked guitars? If the guitars aren’t recorded with phase issues, applying the exciter on both guitars shouldn’t cause issues right? Would it just cause an issue if applied to just one guitar? Would you say the phase shift is more dramatic than dialing a ton of high end and scooping out mids? (Since ew shifts are phase shifts ) And one last question, the solo’ed sounds were the same sounds used in the mix examples? BC the hardware sounded super harsh isolated but in the mix sounded warmer . Thanks for the help! This would help me understand a lot

100% more like this ... software is not expensive vs one piece of hardware (eg $179 distressor plugin vs $1500 hardware) ... but when you start adding up how much you spend on compressor plugins ... pretty soon you are in hardware territory! (I learned this the hard way this year!) ... so hearing where a piece of analog gear put into your chain can really add some magic and value - this is critical and there's nothing else on the internet like this (to the best of my humble knowledge!)

Id REALLY like to see some 500 series comparisons to plugins (think NEVE or API) - those hardware units are not expensive vs the rack units ... would love to see for instance API 512 500 preamp against Pink UAD et al ... and the Access Audio rack (if they have it?) ... also Neve 500 series (I know the 511 is not a clone (although Neve does make a 1073 preamp in 500 format) against various AA and UAD et al ... just spitballing ;)

"Before actually describing the effect an Exciter has on sound, its worth talking about the sonic differences that exist between the Type B and C. To be frank with you, there aren't any that are worth talking about. A practical listening test in the studio with both units side by side, revealed little difference in the sound quality." That was a sound on sound review in 85. The type B plugin should still sound like the type C hardware

I've had the week from hell so kept it purely just to aphex. Had to reinstall everything from my laptop to my new computer, get the analog connected through the id14, then setup all the streaming stuff and video editor again, recreate all the previous settings. Setup protools sessions from scratch and then try to get the audiothing to sound like the hardware which I wasn't expecting to be so hard.. If I added another plugin to the mix I'd probably still be editing as we speak haha 😅

The waves plugin emulates a much older series of the Aphex Aural Exciter. In fact, they say the device is rare as hen's teeth; only a handful were produced back at the time in 1975. The rack-mount you have is a unit from the 90s. People who have the original Exciter are renting it to studios and it goes to around $30 per recorded minute in price. Insane.
