The chest expander is the true pocket gym ,it can fit in a small box neatly , the big bang in a small package is what i call it ! and I love my Spenby.

I read a comment before with someone saying a old timer got blinded using a chest expander when a spring snapped and caught him in the eye (safety goggles is a must)

I like your videos and they inspired me to blow the dust off a bullworker my grandad gave to me and start using it. I have to say that when we talk about the chest expander we have to see it as unique piece of equipment in and of itself. The unique chest expander exercises are the back press, military press, front chest pull and overhead downward pull. The next thing to remember is that these expanders that you get online arent of the best quality and are a 1 size fits all. Ive competed in the International Strand Pulling Association. They select handles based on your wingspan and the springs are top quality but are unfortunately not commercially made. The springs go in 50lbs, 40lbs, 25lbs and 10lbs increments, you can mix and match to go up in 5lb jumps. Ive competed and my best competition pulls are a 300lb back press and a 275lb one arm military press. Rules are extremely strict. As for the name, im not totally certain but going on the history i understand the chest measurement was thought of as a total circumference of the upper body, floppy pecs were not a sort after goal and seen as effeminet by the old timers, so like you rightly state it was mainly from development of the upper back. Also some people may have seen a increment in rib box expansion from heavy breathing combined with opening the chest like a front chest pull done over a bench. Having said this i have to state from personal experience that training for the back press it does catch the chest. I remember it being very hot at the time and its visible to see the chest shorten as you press outwards. Would i consider it a chest exercise? Not really but it does involve the chest. If you want to see a pure example of what a chest expander can do for development check out Fred Rollon or Jack Reid. Lastly i do own bands and have a reasonably heavy duty rubber band chest expander, at first there may not seem like much of a difference but it becomes very apparent with diligent use that the springs have a superior resistance curve, i think its the coil being 3d, that may not sound very scientific but there is something definately there. The bands are great too but to me they serve a different purpose, they are more versatile for sure, lightweight and like you stated they dont catch on your skin.

Having bought both, I can see the pros and cons of each: the chest expander works well for bicep curls, but lacks the intermediate resistance levels, ie, having to swap between one spring or two and legs are really out of the question. The resistance bands are good all round but aren’t quite as good for the bicep curls. On another note, I would like your thoughts on the Bullworker ISO-BOW; is it a waste of money, or a versatile portable device? Thanks again for a very informative video.

Thanks, unfortunately, I'm not really in a position to comment on the Iso-Bow as I've never had any experience with it. Perhaps a future video!

Good video 👍🏻 pretty much anything you can do with a dumbbell you can do with a resistance band. Thats true. And there's plenty machine excercises in the gym that you can also do with resistance bands. Lat pulldowns for example and seated rows and tricep pushdowns etc etc

@@outtriggerTry doing back and front squats , deadlifts seated rows lunges etc with a chest expander. I've also got a chest expander. And your limited with them. You can train the whole body with resistance bands. But you can't train the whole body with a chest expander. Chest expander is at its best when training back

Pinching your bare skin or worse yet a nipple will teach you to never do chest expander without wearing a shirt with at least short sleeves.😂😂
