that hipster "new grass" is shit. They have no identity or connection to the music, no background of being mountain-folk or southerners. They just copy it cos it sounds "cool" to them, and like to play dress up with their coveralls and old time looking clothes. They're pathetic. However Ricky is the real deal! Thank you, I needed to let go. I was feeling guilty that I didn’t fully appreciate this incredible mother or do more with her when she was younger. My mammaw who was the most dedicated Christian woman, loved gospel music. Lately I've had this song stuck in my head. I'm not a Christian but she was. She would sing gospel music all the time. This was one she sang often. I know it because of her and her making me go to church. I guess she's been talking to me and I didn't realize it. I would never personally choose this song but she would. I lost her in 2003. I was 16 years old. I'd give anything to see her again. I will always love gospel music because of her.

And if you didn’t catch the brilliance…. Speaking to it as if it was living…. At the end he says to the mandolin, “oh you want to do just one more before you have to go back in that window. I’m so sorry. I know it’s lonely in there.” That’s in reference to it being behind glass in the museum, a point noted by the presenter at the beginning. But note too the opening line of the song: “I was standing by my window on a cold and cloudy day”. The song is about the singer’s mother’s funeral and his prayer that his mother is in heaven. By saying what he said to the mandolin at the end, and putting the mandolin back behind the window, I believe Ricky is making the mandolin the real singer. The mandolin becomes the body that lost his parent, Bill Monroe. That’s just my take on it. Maybe I think too much.
