Imagine being the poor Japanese businessman trying to sell Klonoa. You've got this cute mascot platformer. It's a great game with critical success. Your company is at it's peak. But nobody's buying it. Desperately you try everything from bizarre big dick ads to free tacos. Still nobody's buying it. Then it hits you. September 11, 2001. The perfect day for Klonoa.

Klonoa 1 is a gaslighting psyop to manipulate a kid into saving the world, even though he would've done it regardless. That leaves him traumatized, with Klonoa 2 being basically about him coming in terms with his PTSD. You know, for kids! Man this is basically Unico the Unicorn all over again.

I didn't even think about that, it's totally Unico. It's easy to not identify inspiration or clear connections when it's not on your radar. Considering the lack of in-depth information on Klonoa's production process I wouldn't be remotely surprised if the creator was thinking "what if Unico, but as a video game?" I guess it's not necessarily a concept that's never been done but the way it's executed is eerily similar from the bittersweet emotions you feel when they're forced to start over again to the whimsical and endearing character relationships. Even the ending of the manga has that similarity where Unico sorta comes to terms with his role in the universe. Really cool connection.

"It's a very human reaction that I think a lot of people have experienced before." Only 3 months before COVID hit, I traveled to the otherside of the world to meet someone I'd fallen in love with. I spent two incredible weeks with them until having to get the plane back. I still remember every emotion I felt in that terminal. I didn't want to say goodbye but I knew I literally had to. I didn't have enough money to just up and move to the other side of the world, I barely had enough to go there for two weeks. Plus the country spoke an entirely different language and their culture was very different to my own. And I barely speak my own language or fit in where I was raised. So I had to get the plane and I had to say goodbye. I had never cried in public before until that day. Both of us barely able to speak, knowing that once I went through that gate this series of moments that literally felt like a dream would be over. I'd never done something so daring as to travel and stay awake for 30 straight hours just to meet someone I'd never even spoken to on a videocall. Just the fact that it went as beautifully as it did was a miracle. I've never felt so fucking powerless in my life, standing there, looking at this person who was trying to be strong for me as I was the one who had to actually move their feet and breach that point of no return. I handed the person my boarding pass and headed through the gate. We were waving and crying the entire time and as I walked down that corridor, more people walked in front of us and it was getting harder and harder to see. Eventually I just had to walk around that corner, that special person leaving my sight. I've never felt so much regret and helplessness as I did in that moment. Then COVID hit and everything got really fucked up. Everything is still fucked up and I'm very much fucked up. This year I decided to softmod my PS2 with free mcboot and played Klonoa 2 for the first time. What I expected was a run of the mill platformer. What I didn't expect was one of the most wonderfully designed, creative, challenging and genuinely moving games I've ever played. The game kicked my ass at times but I loved it so much for that. The story, the characters, the art design; all felt so effortless. It felt like everyone just knew what to do and did it. I didn't expect to feel the way I did when I played K2 but it was incredibly special and I'm glad to hear that you also have a place in your heart for it like I now do. Hopefully we get K3 someday.

But I stumbled upon JonTron's videos at that time, and I'd laughed harder than I'd ever done in a month. His videos brought me some much-needed levity, and after my first week off, I was in a better place mentally and went back to college. Completed my first course, and every other after that. It just goes to show how a well-made and high-quality video can have a positive impact on someone. Even when comedy's not the main focus, when the person making the video comes up with these jokes and works them so naturally into the script, it can catch anyone off-guard at the best of times. And at the worst of times, it's a much-needed reminder that life has plenty of good to offer. I know my experiences weren't related to Running Shine specifically, but I figured I'd share anyway, cause I could relate to your dilemma. I have a similar thing, but I still don't know where it comes from. I have this really huge fascination with giving characters overpowered arms. Not weapons, like literally an arm. Like, Devil May Cry's Nero with his devil arm, but I didn't play that game until I was like 28. I was writing fanfiction and stuff where protagonists get stuff along the lines of magically infused arms, or I had one character that had an archaic language written on his arm that could destroy anything provided he found the right word for it on his arm. Just ... "Yeah, the guy with the demon arm over there." Typing this out, maybe it's because of Scar in FMA. He was a sick anti-hero in the end. Way more memorable than the Sins. Oh, and forget that first guy trying to call you out on writing fanfiction. Some of the best Sonic stories recently are written by Ian Flynn, who started out writing Sonic fanfiction back in the day. That shit's a gateway to your dreams if you keep it up.

I actually played Klonoa 2 after you guys streamed the first one on the channel. Its was a phenomenal game and this was a pretty phenomenal review! It's actually amazing how many moving parts there are to a game that you don't even realize is contributing to the experience. Glad this finally came out and I'm super excited for the next one!

Finally the Klonoa 2 video! as soon as I saw that it was up, got some food and watched it right away. Amazing job as always. I find it really weird that I really like Klonoa 2 and I played it twice on different times in my life, but I couldn't remember the full story until now (maybe because I played when I didn't understand English as much) most of the levels stuck with me though, the mirror museum, the ark, the city on fire, snowboard stage, amazing stuff. And yeah, people are used to call every 3D game with an outline "cell shading" even I do it, I will correct myself from now on. Now to wait for the TWETY video and hopefully a stream soon.

Kinda surprised you didn't mention the ill-fated official webcomic, which managed to have it both ways in regards to the canon by having an older Klonoa and having him hop between the different dream worlds so all the existing casts could return.

I still remember playing Klonoa 2 in grade school. I knew it was a game made in Japan, so i thought the fake language they used was Japanese. Imagine my surprise when my school gets some random old Japanese animator to come and talk about kid's TV programing and I deadass ask him what the characters are saying. I don't remember his exact response but I think it was "Oh that's a cool language but I don't think it's Japanese". I do remember liking him more than the holocaust victim they brought in, that guy was a downer for us 7 year olds.

The algorithm threw more Klonoa into my face, I click, I loved it, subscribed. It's hardly subtle with the name of the Kingdom of Sorrow being HUPOnia, the tracks of Klonoa 1 coming in during the music, the rocking chairs from his dead grandpa placed among the background and the King of Sorrow having big floppy ears and a collar....that Klonoa really did get fucked up by the events of the first game and the world reflects his sorrow. He could easily have let that emotion bury him and become something the world rejected, instead he welcomes the sorrow like any other emotion in the end and becomes a balanced person for it. Fucking slam dunk in my heart, shits tight.

Loved this one--of course, though. Klonoa in general has to be one of the coolest things to come out of the wildly experimental millennium era of video games. Dreams as subject matter are insanely tough to portray in a visual form due to how intangible the imagery can be. Klonoa, especially Lunatea's Veil, really does hit on that sweet spot. Your observation about the Kingdom of Sorrow was on-point, with how impractical and lucid all the sights are. My dreams usually take place in empty wastelands or janky reconstructions of places I've been around. I love seeing that shit in games because it feels familiar in that way. Also, the soundtrack is an all-timer and I really appreciated the emphasis on that. Having a rough time of it, and needed a real laugh. Definitely laughed-- laughed so hard I choked on my damn drink. Thanks, Melo and co.

I played through the first Klonoa earlier this year and was really surprised it wasn't talked about as much as Spyro and Crash, because it really is a great little platformer that does pretty much everything it sets out to do and then some. I was excited to hear you guys were doing a video on the sequel because the series deserves more attention. Video came out great too. I can't think of any other video producer that managed to balance crude comedy with genuineness nearly as well. The subtle Pink Floyd references were really cheeky. Voice mixing also sounds better this time around. My subwoofer isn't shitting its pants and it just sounds a lot clearer than the OoT and YIIK videos. I also wanna say that I appreciate the shorter length this time around. I don't mind long videos at all, but having a review be the length of a movie usually means watching it in parts and I think it makes it a little less appealing. It obviously depends on the type of game and sometimes there's just more to say about them and more to cover, but I think 40 minutes to an hour is a good sweetspot for this type of content. Means I can just watch it in one go and feel engaged. That's just my opinion though, always like to watch whatever you guys put out and always looking forward what you tackle next.

I mean this with full honesty, but you are the funniest KZitemr out there today. The fact that you and the rest of the team behind this channel can make hour long video game reviews without reaching common video essay of pretentiousness/redundancy nor 2010s game reviewers level of cringe is pure magic. Too many modern KZitemrs pad their videos out far too long than they need to be, but it really feels like every extra bit in your video fits perfectly. Not to mention all of the non sequiturs into Nietzsche getting syphilis, Pink Floyd, or the random Jim Norton image. It's also really cool how you can review a video game from both a programmer and musician's perspective rather than just a the standard method of reddit level "the story doesn't make sense/there's plot holes" even though we're talking about video games and not books. I doubt this is your main gig, but if you had a patreon, I would definitely pay for it. Hope to see more content soon!
