1:01:13 If I recall correctly, this is because it's a framebuffer effect--the game is actually taking a picture of the screen before you pause. This is why it takes longer on some emulators, including Nintendo's official ones. This is also why on some emulators if you're playing on high resolution, the screen suddenly gets pixellated as you pause, as in those cases, the framebuffer is still being emulated at 240p, so the picture of the game in the background is also 240p.

1:41:29 The prototype overdump from this January included an old dump of the entire game's script that explained what each of those spells were. The Spirit spell let you control Navi, the Light spell illuminated dark areas and damaged enemies, and the Shadow spell functioned like Nayru's Love in the final game, only it made you invisible to enemies instead of just invulnerable. The Wind (became Forest medallion) spell became Farore's Wind, the Fire spell became Din's Fire, and the Ice (became Water medallion) spell just froze enemies in the vicinity with a blast of ice similar to the fire medallion/Din's Fire. Among other beta elements, these were fully implemented in the '97 Spaceworld Restoration romhack of Ocarina of Time. Highly recommend checking it out, they also show off the cut maps actually populated with enemies and objects, with at least some degree of accuracy.

1:46:36 The best fan theory I've read for why Navi flies away at the end has to do with the healing fairies you can catch in a bottle. The theory is that once a fairy fulfills its purpose, it ceases to exist. The healing fairies disappear as soon as they heal Link. The Kokiri's fairies always stay with the Kokiri because they're assigned companions and Kokiris never die unless they leave the woods. But Link isn't a Kokiri, and the Deku Tree only sends Navi to Link to help him fulfill his destiny by defeating Ganon. Once Link has done that, Navi's purpose has been fulfilled. Why does she fly away after Zelda sends him back to his childhood? Because she's about to vanish and doesn't want Link to see her go. It's why Link never finds her during his search before (and presumably after) Majora's Mask: she died.

1:27:49 well, funny thing... I'm a huge sucker for this shit, I've done an assload of autistic research looking at different TV rips to get the look perfect. So many KZitemrs make small mistakes about them or just don't give a shit but this one REALLY nailed it! The rating's at the exact spot, it's the right size, it's there for 15 seconds which on a first watch I thought it went on for too long but no it's the right length! Like I could be really nitpicky and say that there could have been a frame or two of the rating fading in and out but for a dumb joke in an Ocarina of Time video it goes above the call of duty. Thanks the review Running Shine! I gotta say the bit at 1:40:15 about how art may not end up exactly how you want it to but you shouldn't be discouraged by that, as that's part of the process really got to me. I recently picked up drawing as a hobby and I ended up psyching myself out of drawing early on because it didn't end up how I wanted it to. So when you then said "As long as you put your heart into it you will have something special" Really helped out especially since I've been working on just enjoying the process and experimenting and getting better. So all in all thank you for the inspiration!

Originally when oot was supposed to take place entirely in a castle, it was going to actually be a castle, most likely hyrule castle and feature portals to seamlessly warp from one room to another, a decade before portal created it. Oh man, this review has been my most anticipated review of the decade. I played OoT a ton on the GameCube when I was a kid. It absolutely terrified me no matter what. A constant feeling of unease and mystery seemed to fill every inch of the game. It was a fantasy world that seemed entirely *alien* to me as a kid and it scared me. It may have impacted my view of the world. New discoveries and worlds won't be filled with magic and mystery but with demons, and re-deads. Even as an adult the sudden shift in Castle town from "The only place that doesn't scare me" to "Pants-shittingly terrifying" still gives me the shivers. Even creepier, until you go to Kakariko Village, it seems like everyone is dead and is now trying to eat you. This was made even more upsetting when we played Majora's Mask, which has the same lesson to learn. New places are here to ruin your life and are filled with nightmares. This is why I love Zelda to this day though. Hyrule always feels completely alien to me. This isn't just "Fancy 1200s Europe" or "Magical Sengoku Jidai", it's Hyrule. Twilight Princess does this the best to me, as it also introduces a hellish alternate reality that is full of corrupted creatures who want to invade and bring twilight to the world. It's amazing. I love that you talk about the music, because it is something that I never even realized. It is always so atmospheric and helped scare the crap out of me as a kid.

I'm super late but the trick to fighting Dark Link is to wear your iron boots. He gets weighed down as well and it prevents him from backflipping. Sticks to the "use the dungeon item to beat the miniboss" rule but with the item you've been using to solve puzzles and not the item you actually get from the dungeon.

This video actually got me to play OOT and learn to appreciate a lot of older games that can seem a little inaccessible nowadays. Easily my favorite video on this site!

Finally had a chance to watch this vid and it's easily one of the best oot reviews. The editing is great, the script is fun and witty, and it also feels like I experienced the game again. This channel is a hidden gem that desperately needs to be uncovered. Keep up the awesomeness man.

I love the loose structure of the review, there is very little that hasnt been said about this gem over the years but the way you turn the conversation towards the history of a spesific part of development, rumors and the consumer side of things keeps me hooked for the 111 minutes this video lasts.

1:47:24 Explains the exact problem I had with Link to the Past, it did not meet a single expectation that the internet set up for it. I had heard a few people rip on Ocarina of Time before I played it and as such I kept my expectations reasonable, but everyone being pretty unanimous on LTTP's supposed greatness only brewed a potent hate in me towards the game when its problems kept piling up.

Running Shine, I hope you realize that your content is seriously top-notch. It's hilarious, but still full of very interesting insights on games, even ones that have been looked at to death like OoT. You've got a ton of respect from me and countless other people. Keep it up!

I always thought the Stalfos and Lizard man fights were really cool. It's pretty primitive combat by today's standards but back in the day it felt like something out of an action movie.

I really got to say, comparing OoT to Hendrix is a really great concept. Both were extremely influential for their times, creating something unique to be built upon and expanded further. By today’s standards definitely a little archaic and out performed but when taken at face value still holds up very well over time. Great analogy

Fantastic vid. Hit the highs and lows perfectly, and the editing and humor are really hitting the mark. I paused to laugh at that Joe Rogan Arwing joke for like 30 seconds, and you're able to tell really edgy jokes that land without sounding like some kind of /pol/ nutcase. Keep it up!

I'm glad this footage is straight from an N64 instead of an emulator. Reminds me how spoiled I feel with this game today compared to playing it on emulator. Even when I had the Gamecube version, I played this game way more on emulator.

Just discovered your channel last night and watched the Sonic Adventure video. This one is even better. I've seen you compared to Matthew Matosis and Joseph Anderson in the comments, but your videos are different in just the right ways. Something about the humor frequently woven in just as much as these really impassioned digressions about how nice the music is or thinking about the developers' experiences feels really... I dunno, natural? Human? Me no English good tldr comfy stuff, liked and subbed

I'll be honest I have neither nostalgia nor a great love for this game, I like it, a solid 7/10 but it never amazed me. Reviews like this show not only the passion others have but you have for this game and I always appreciate that, it always gives me a want to replay it either in respect of said passion or an attempt at "getting" it. Keep up the hustle!

2 things I would like to add to the section where you talk about Zelda 64. 1. The DD was a flop, yes, but that wasn't the reason for OOT to move on cartridge. Yoshiaki Koizumi was basically in charge of quality control and was very unhappy with the DD version. The disc system was slow and with so many things going on and all the separated areas moving from place to place was a real drudgery because of all the loading. In Koizumi's own words "My Link won't work on the 64DD." 2. This November Giles Goddard shared a short footage of the earliest development stage (the first person phase) where he was working on a travelling method that's very similar to the Portal mechanic. He stated that the footage takes place in Hyrule Castle/Ganon's Castle that still acts as the main hub here. And you can recognise 2 areas that are from the Forest Temple, with geometry and textures pretty much unchanged. So Hyrule Castle's original design survived all 4 development stages, possibly nearly intact in many places. They turned it into its own dungeon and only made layout adjustments. The main hall of the Forest Temple has a very Mario 64 feel to it, and the Phantom Ganon fight takes place in a room that is a remnant of the painting concept. It's the exact same room design. It feels like every few weeks there are new discoveries, especially the new information we have from Goddard gives a whole new perspective on the Forest Temple and the original vision for Zelda 64. I can imagine it feeling like a mix between Shadowgate and Zelda. Fantastic video! It's refreshing to hear positive opinions about the game's most hated dungeons.
