Seeing Webster get a little bit of comeuppance, albeit at the hands of Heeney was unexpected. Webster's 7 game suspension hit on Simpkin earlier this year just makes me feel like he deserved a bit of a tune up at some point 😂

I'm a Kiwi and although I've followed the sport religiously since the early 80's as a Kiwi and not growing up around the sport some things do make me scratch my head, can someone explain the thinking behind not tackling around the legs? It obviously always seemed weird why that's not allowed, especially as pushing in the back is also a free which is going to happen when you tackle the body.

You can tackle the legs, just can’t tackle below the knees
@indyspud

It's because it verges into the territory of blatant tripping. In AFL you are not allowed to just dive and tag the foot as they're running and have it clip their other leg. A legal tackle in this sport is one between the shoulder and the knee. Those are the two easily visible "lines" of the body that umpires can adjudicate legal tackles on players as the game is under way. I also theorise that because AFL is a 360 degree sport (compared to union or league for example), so tackles can come from any direction, but that also means that if you could tackle legs then it might lead to more severe knee and ankle injuries. Now that all said, tackles can slip down the body while players are in motion - and over the years you've probably seen occasional leniency in the umpire's interpretation on whether they'll call a legal tackle or a trip - but what will change their opinion is whether the tackle was "completed" before the below knee contact happens, or if that was a major contributing factor to the player being tackled. Hope that makes sense. :)

Heeney is stiff as he really did nothing forceful or even forseeable to injure (Webster wasn't concussed was he?) Rankine, while I agree that he gets a suspension and don't even disagree with the length. It irks me that there is at least 1 bump from this season that got less for a shoulder to the head (resulting in concussion) where Rankine was a head clash from an admittedly grub act (Rankine went off for blood on the top of his head where he copped a chin) With those 2 examples I just want it to feel fair and consistent. Heeney could not reasonably be expected to foresee that outcome. If he went for a sternum whack and missed I get it. If it's intentional conduct for a head clash concussion resulting from a forceful bump that's ok. But why is it careless if you run through a blokes head with your shoulder after he gets rid of the ball. It feels like the line changes between the flavour of the week is. I just want predictable outcomes

The action of Rankines is still really bad. You just don’t smash a bloke when he isn’t looking and unable to brace himself dosent matter who you are or play for. Really dirty act.

I disagree with the characterization of Rankine's hit as a dirty act. Careless, ill judged, undisciplined, sure, but to me it looked like the sort of thing opponents do repeatedly behind the play in every match. People are making it out like Rankine went out of his way to target Starcevich, but Starcevich was running directy towards Rankine, who simply stopped and to took a single step to initiate the bump. The problem for Rankine was that Starcevich wasn't looking where he was going, and that's the only reason the action resulted in an unlikely concussion for Starcevich and laceration on the head for Rankine. We don't know what Rankine was thinking, but it was probably either a preemptive bump (get him before he gets me) or an attempt to make space for himself off the stoppage, and he probably didn't notice Starcevich wasn't looking until it was too late. Even then, 9 times out of 10 a bump like that would not have resulted in an injury and the sanction would be minor or non existent.
