That D18 you worked on use to be mine. It has been a family heirloom in my family. I gave it to my nephew for Christmas, knowing he'd treasure it. Thank you for the amazing job you've done on it.

I definitely hear the treble on the D-21. My 1963 D-28 has that same powerful top end with a strong bass as well, and enough volume to be heard over banjos and mandolins. I’ve never been tempted to have its braces scalloped for fear of losing some of its magic! I have a 30+ year old HD-28 and it has almost too much bass, sort of like turning up all the bass on a good stereo, but it gets lost above the A string.

I’ve noticed a trend in modern guitars in that sound a great deal like the D-18 even the rosewood guitars. A lot of builders are getting away from the big bass boom sound and are going for more balance. My favorite is the D18!

I bought a '64 D-18 in January that had been scalloped after production by a well known luthier/instrument dealer called John Lundberg in Berkeley CA. My luthier who has the guitar for a neck reset etc. said had I not have told him he wouldn't have known it wasn't factory scalloped. (Apart from the knowledge that '60s d-18 weren't scalloped, of course). It was very well done.

Lundberg was one of the first to scallop post construction. Frank Ford did my 73 in 83. I've done probably 200 by now.

What's the process involved? I assumed you would have to take thee top off to do it but my luthier said there are ways to do it without taking the guitar apart, which I find fascinating given how little room you have to work with and how awkward it must be. @@Bryankimsey

Just like this, pretty much. For the tone bars, I use a curved rasp, a mirror, and a portable back-up camera inside the guitar: kzitem.info/news/bejne/u4B4np1vjqOjaaA

They both sound really nice. I slightly prefer mahogany overall but love rosewood too, brazilian and indian. The best sounding guitar I've ever played was a bourgeois brazilian b/s dread.

The D-18 sounds exactly like it is supposed to. I can’t say enough good things about the full mod (w/scalloping) you did for my 70 D-28, but I wouldn’t touch a thing on the D-18.

Great video Sir. I don't put much into scalloped braces either. Yes, there is a difference in sound but both sound good to me. On a side note, my Recording King RD-328's X bracing has scalloped for the lower part of the X bracing and the forward part isn't. It's crazy. That guitar sounds so good, for a budget priced guitar. Solid Adirondack spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides. V shaped neck profile (don't care too much for that) and has dovetail neck to body joint. And no epoxy...lol. They use wood glue throughout. Again, great video, can't wait for your next one.

Both are good. There are really good trebles in that 21, but I am really a 18 guy and I would pick that one if I had a choice. By the way. How would a 1966 Martin D18 stack up compared to, like 50's models?
@Bryankimsey
5 ай бұрын
Very different guitars. '66 will have Rotomatics (maybe.... can't remember when they switch for D-18's), rear X braces, non-hide glue. '66 is the last year for a T-bar truss rod. Necks are all over the map. 50's has SUPER REAR X location which produces a very bright sound, Kluson tuners, hide glue, T-bar, usually a big neck.

@@Bryankimsey Thanks Bryan. I'm not up on all the differences either right off. I know where there is a 66' for sale. Haven't made up my mind to go look at it yet. I think I would rather have a 50's. 😊

Can't help it .. I love mahogany.. that 21 does sound good though with some good volume and trebles.. However that Mahogany sure has a great baseline like Mahogany has .. once in a while you hear a mahogany guitar with a good top that will have some good trebles in it too... I would like to hear that 21 against a newer 28 ..

Bryan, you have some awesome hearing aids that allow you to really capture these subtle A/B differences….are they specially made for musicians? I’m headed in the direction of needing some….
@Bryankimsey
5 ай бұрын
No... they're just normal hearing aids. I do spend time with my audiologist getting the settings right. Mostly it's because I've had a hearing loss since I was a child so it's all I've ever known and I've trained myself to hear stuff. The brain is an amazing thing and it's really your brain that hears, not the ears.

I think there is a big difference in the mic’d sound that we hear and what Brian hears setting behind the guitar. Brian would have to play and listen and then play back his recording and listen to confirm or deny.

Great question/observation! I listen to the KZitem video. One BIG difference that I talk about ALL THE TIME is the feel of the guitar and how it affects what you "hear". First of all, your bones are great sound conductors so I'm positive that some "sound" comes up thru your hands.... try holding a tuning fork while wearing ear plugs. But the response of the guitar in my hands is _massive_ and definitely affects what I "hear". I talked about that at the end when I was talking about the feel in the right hand. Back in the day I used to record A/B's on a DAT. I had one guitar that was like a live animal in my hands and one that was like playing a brick. The "brick" sounded better on the recording but the "live" guitar was SO MUCH more fun to play. I'd have taken it over the better sounding one... well, actually, I _did_!!! There's just so much more to it for me than just the sound alone and that's why I give you my impressions.

Hog has less vol, but more darker tone pop, snap. Definitely will be heard in any jam. That hog is a cannon cutter. Stop using those shit Elxiers strings. Those guitars would sound 75% to 85% better. With Ph B strings.

Neither one has Elixir strings... where did you get that? I use Elixir PB Nanowebs on my personal guitars, and have for about 20 years, but these are not personal guitars. These have D'Addarrio EJ17 and Stringjoy.
