In this article will be discussing sciatica and its relationship to the upper cervical spine. Embedded in this article is a video of Heather Nicholson a long time patient at our Blair upper cervical healthcare office in Carson. Heather talks about how she suffered for over 10 years from chronic sciatica. Heather went to chiropractors, acupuncturists, mainstream medical doctors, and massage but nothing seemed to help.
One day Heather was at the dog park and ran into another dog owner. They got talking and Heather talked about how she was suffering for over a decade from sciatica. The gentleman happens to be a patient in our office and highly recommended she come to our office.
Heather decided to come to our office and as we do with all patients we took a history and ran her through a battery of tests and determined that her atlas(c-1) and axis (c-2) vertebra at the top of the neck were misaligned and interfering with the central nervous system. We then took eight different digital x-rays to ascertain the exact direction of C1 and C2 misalignment. The information gleaned from the x-rays was then used to make a precise correction to the atlas and axis with no twisting, popping, or pulling of the neck.
The goal of the Blair Upper Cervical procedure is to restore normal motion to a misaligned upper cervical vertebra and then monitor it over time to make sure it stays in its normal range of motion. While the adjustment holds, and no neurological irritation exists, the body goes through a healing and repair process. In Heather's case, her sciatica and sleep issues resolved to the point where it only occasionally comes back if she is out of alignment. She can go months without any return of problems.
Sciatica Statistics
Sciatica is common. In fact, sciatica affects approximately 1-5 percent t of the population annually and 20 percent of Americans will develop sciatica at some point in their life. (1)
Sciatica Symptoms
Pain areas: in the back, buttocks, hip, or lower extremities
Pain types: can be mild, severe, radiating, or sharp
Pain circumstances: can occur due to injury or while sitting
Muscular: difficulty walking or muscle weakness
Sensory: leg numbness or pins and needles
Also common: burning sensation, foot numbness, or weakness
What causes sciatica??
Eighty percent of sciatica cases ate caused by a tight piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle attaches to the upper leg bone, called the femur and also attaches to the hard bone between the buttocks, called the sacrum. Underneath the piriformis muscle lies the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight it can entrap the sciatic nerve and reproduce the pain people feel radiating down the leg.
In our Los Angeles based upper cervical health care offices we have found correcting the interference at the top of the neck, where the piriformis muscle tone is regulated, it can cause the piriformis muscle to relax and as a result, the entrapment of the sciatic nerve is relieved and the patient feels relief. in Heather's case, upper cervical care has not been a complete cure-all, however, as long as her upper neck is in alignment she lives life pain-free and has been doing so for the past five years.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often help remove the underlying cause of many who suffer from Vertigo, dizziness, neck pain, headaches, and other chronic health problems by supporting the body in healing itself.
