Kurt has been a patient in our office for the past 5 and a half months. As Kurt mentions in the embedded video, he was referred to the office by a nurse who had recovered from similar issues. He sought care in our office because of a laundry list of health complaints that he just learned to live with. Kurt was in a whiplash car accident when younger and from that point forward he suffered from postural imbalance, neck pain, insomnia, and other musculoskeletal pains.
Thankfully, we corrected Kurt's upper cervical spine and rather quickly his health problems resolved. Kurt's case was unusual in that his symptomology recovered quickly. Usually, we find that patients who have long-standing chronic problems take weeks, months, and sometimes years to completely resolve. Kurt's case is the exception to the rule and we find that one out of ten cases get what we call the "overnight miracle case". With that said, the great majority of patients go through a see-saw battle as they recover their health. Health returns in cycles.
Insomnia and Neck Injury
One of the most common issues patients come in our Los Angeles based upper cervical health care office is sleep disturbance. Neck injuries can cause the top vertebrae in the neck to misalign and cause irritation to the central nervous system. When an upper cervical misalignment exists, it can cause what is known as, sympathetic hyperactivity. When the sympathetic nervous system is hyperactive it can limit the bodies ability to have restful sleep. (1)
"Hyperarousal is a key component in all modern etiological models of insomnia disorder. Overall patterns in the literature suggest that over-active neurobiological and psychological systems contribute to difficulty sleeping. Even so, mixed results regarding the specific mechanisms linking hyperarousal to sleep disturbance limit current etiological conceptualizations. Similar basal arousal profiles between individuals with high vs low risk for insomnia in the absence of stress exposure suggest that dysregulated stress “response” rather than general hyperarousal may be a more pertinent marker of risk" (2) It is our opinion that upper cervical misalignment increases sympathetic tone and in the many cases that come to our office with insomnia, the cause is often upper cervical misalignment. Kurt's case is one of the hundreds that we have seen recover from insomnia.
Anyone who has ever suffered from chronic insomnia knows that a lack of good sleep affects almost every aspect of a person's life. The decrease in cognitive function, depression, and musculoskeletal complaints are commonly associated with patients who suffer from chronic sleep issues.
The head weighs 10-12 pounds and the atlas weighs two ounces. This anatomical region is susceptible to spinal misalignment. Whiplash trauma, sports injuries, and other traumatic events can cause spinal misalignment that can lead to the types of health issues that Kurt describes in the embedded video testimony.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often affect vertigo and aid your body in healing itself.
