When I was 16 I was able to grow a beard. Like most people at that age, I resided at home with my parents. My parents hated beards and was always bullied to shave it off and forced to listen to their snide remarks like, you must be trying to hide something. Usually I simply ignored them. Finally, Dad kicked me out of the house untill I shave. I asked why. He said We didnt raise you ' That way'. Equaiting beards with Hells Angels and Fidel Castrol. I never shaved. I was able to return home after 3 days as my Mom talked Dad into letting,me return. No, I never shaved. I have a beard to this day, albiet its gray unlike the dark brown it used to be. Im 65yrs old now and never shaved. Its ok to shave or not. Just dont do it for the wrong reasons.

Real Men Real Style good point on it all being more societal. In feudal Japan, Long hair and beards was a sign of some "dishonor", or being "masterless". This was more societal AND psychological as Japanese men would let it grow if that was the case. Isee a beard it looks chill, like you don't stress too much on looks.

Most women do not like beards. Beards can also be very "and are" unsanitary. The safety razor at the turn of the century changed all that. There are so many males that keep a over grown and unkempt beard. They don't seem to care about their appearance. Or what anyone else thinks of them. And wearing a baseball cap with the beard makes it worse! It's just a excuse not to shave. I know this sounds very harsh. And I'm sorry. But we are going backwards in time! 🧔

The way I see it, a man's beard is a symbol of his masculinity, just as a woman's long hair is a symbol of her femininity. Most women would never dream of shaving their heads, but rather they go to great lengths to care for and nurture their hair. So why would a man shave his face, why not embrace his beard and maintain it? And in the professional world, a woman is never asked or expected to cut her long hair, so why are men more often than not expected to shave their beards? The way I see it, as long as a beard is well trimmed, there is no sense in shaving it off. Now I'm not saying every man has to have one if he doesn't want too. But what I am saying is, if any guy on here is thinking about growing a beard, but has been hesitant, as a bearded man; let me just encourage you at least try it. Give it a chance, and if you don't like it, you don't have to keep it. Good luck, and keep on truckin'!

I have had beards for past 22 years. Recently i took it to a new length spurred on by woman i was seeing who preferred big beard or at least she said she did. Strangely enough i feel like i lost myself in process, not being able to look at my face at all for so long (as opposed to a short beard that enhances face). I became more irritable i think and felt unkempt particularly bc i also have dreadlocks again and combination of 2 didnt match my self image at professional workplace setting. Id walk by a mirror and wonder who was looking back at me. But i kept it bc she said she liked it. Strangely tho the "you're so handsome/hot" compliments became less and less frequent and i began to wonder if request was to make me less appealing to other women (as i was concident in my appearance when i met her and she knew i got a lot of female attention at that time). But it may have had unexpected effect of making me less attractive to her too. Anyway i felt controlled and 2 wks after we broke up i trimmed it down yesterday and got undercut, leaving about an inch everywhere and 2 for stash and i feel like myself again. A change in appearance was needed. Why i didnt like big beard? I just think i look my best with a short one n so why hide it. It's like a girl with large perky chest wearing hoodies everyday. Am i egotistical or does that make sense as realistic experience bc well it was my experience with giant beard

I have been growing a beard most of my life. I'm 74 and started shaving when I was 13. It wasn't pleasant. Never enjoyed. Had a heavy growth. So just not shaving was most comfortable for me. Keeping it trimmed, of course. Last year i tried shaving again and people said I looked younger, etc. But it was a chore. It lasted 10 months and was a relief to not shave again. Never grew a beard to be anything other than what I am. Never related it to masculinity, aggression or whatever. I am what I am and that's all I ever can be.

It's kind of obvious that facial hair on a man puts out a sense of aggression and dominance, I mean it's almost like a Lion getting his mane. When a boys starts growing a beard it's a sign that he is becoming a man, readying himself to perhaps lead his own pride of lions some day, so to speak. It's a flag that says "hey ladies, look at my face, look at my hairy face! Look how thick my beard is! Just think of how much testosterone I have circulating in my veins! You will want to have my babies!". It also says "hey asshole, step away from my bitches and look at my face, look at my hairy face! Look how thick my beard is! Think of how much more manly I am than you are because of all that testosterone circulating in my veins! You will want to leave because I could easily kick your ass!". It's a primitive yet beautiful part of every man's existence. I think growing a beard (or a "yeard") is something every man should try, provided they have good beard growing genes.

Hi Antonio I am a master barber and have been for almost 40 years. Beards and facial hair in general have been on the steady increase within the past five years. Some interesting insights can be extrapolated from point 3: the more that men signal typically masculine traits, the traits that are derived from the natural biological progression/maturing of men, the more people respond with a sense that the individual is aggressive, isolated and less collaborative. The less a man emits these signals, the more like a woman his appearance (less facial hair) the more he is assumed to have typically designated female attributes: low threat, more collaborative. From my point of view, when I review my past, I find that such responses are rarely thought-though, but merely _responded to._ Based on that, I think I'd classify these as instinctive responses. The trouble comes when we start inserting symbolic meanings and interpretations of simple responses rather than keeping the responses within the stimulus-response scope of "red means stop," "green means go."

After around a year of having facial hair always kept neat and trim, I'm amazed at the positive reactions when out and about with strangers. I do have a baby face when I have no facial hair since my lips are narrow and my chin is pointy. The facial hair makes my lips look wider and my chin larger. I chose to always shave off the long lines of hair from lip to chin on either side which most goatees have since I feel they make a guy look sad or angry and also to give it a customized look.

The beard signals masculinity. Having a beard (keep in well groomed) = sign of authority, age & wisdom. I am usually clean-shaven (and up to 2 days stubble) and I recently started growing out my moustache & chin (aka circle beard or goatee) and found that many women love it. This is not the reason I grew it but it is definitely nice.

Mask mandates ended in LA recently. Popped out with a clean cut beard and mustache and women instantly complimented me and tell me I’m handsome. Female coworkers much more into me. Rn imma go through trying to let the full face grow, bout to look sloppy for a bit.

Salute Antonio, I was nervous watching this one thinking you would troll us beard folk, being a clean shaven chap. Pleasantly surprised at your objectivity. I do wear a goatee or a balbo style of beard, primarily to complement my bald head, short chin and also to indulge in the empowerment it gives. To add, I have found that shaving my mustache improves the perception of my beard to the corporate world of how groomed I am. Great vid, Cheers!

I agree with you 100% for me specifically. I wanted to change my style as you can see in my profile picture. I was clean shaven but now I have a goatee and I'm trying to grow a beard that attaches to my sideburns it may be looked upon as aggressive and assertive but I'm studying hard to become a paraprofessional and I want to send that message that I'm serious about what I want to accomplish and I'm willing to work hard to achieve what I want. I always keep it well-groomed and maintained to keep that professional appearance.

As for the hipster, he grows a beard as a fashion accessory. As soon as a new trend comes along he will shave and probably wear matching sox. As for the beardsman...Often there is one who's mere mortal body cannot contain the shear epic awesomeness of his soul, and, unable to be contained, his glory bursts and spouts forth through his face in majesty and splendor, where all may bask in the majestic beauty of...the beard.

TacticalTimmy12 YES... This man gets it! Only those who can take the time and effort to properly grow, groom and maintain a real full beard would understand this. Why some people think a beard makes people look homeless I'll never understand. I take more time cleaning and maintaining my beard than most women take on their bathroom habits! Also, the only women I am interested in are those who appreciate what a real man looks like. If I go looking for a woman, it will be a woman of virtue who looks further than "skin-deep". I would treat her like a true man would and my faithfulness would never fail. Beauty flows from the inside-out people, NOT the outside-in... If you have "superficial standards" you reap vanity. A relationship like that is bound to end in infidelity... For the women out there... Look INSIDE the man and stop judging by outward appearance. Learn to love your man for WHO he IS instead of HOW he LOOKS! Peace...

Free advice on man grooming videos abound, however, Antonio, your brief article including different perspectives on what facial hair signals is worth internalizing. As a fellow who is confident in growing and grooming his first beard, ever, it's a personal journey. Beards won't get boxed in and fade out anytime soon, don't really see that happening. I don't see men without beards as necessarily being in a box either, it's all in how you internalize and present your alpha traits.
