Even considering time constraints, the Sentry Gun scenes add so little time but are simply an incredible addition to the film. It adds so much tension, showing how relentless the Aliens are, how cunning they are to retreat and look for a new avenue, it showcases some of the really cool firepower Hudson was bragging about, etc. It also wipes out dozens of Aliens, helping to explain why we see so relatively few later on. This short set of scenes adds so much richness to the film that the film really suffers without it. It explains why the Aliens chose to move thru the ceilings. And otherwise how would Ripley just waltz in to the queen's den? It makes more sense knowing 100 Aliens were mowed down by the Sentry guns.

The first time I had seen Aliens was when it had it's TV network premiere in the late 80s when I was in middle school. I was still in elementary school in 1986 and my parents wouldn't let me watch an R rated movie. The sentry gun scene was always there in the TV edit, I guess they added it to make the run time longer for commercials. So I was shocked when I rented it later and the theatrical cut didn't have it. For a while I thought I had imagined the scene but was happy to see it later in VHS director's cuts and then the DVD/Blu-Rays.

One thing you have to say about the Xenos, it's impressive how much ammo is costs to hold the horde back when they are on the offensive advance. They had over 150 Xeno warriors to use and probably threw a dozen in hallway with small waves to expend the ammo.

@@Tipi83 But that's not enough since they would need one host for each birth (as the host is killed in the process). The Queen is useless without the hosts (unlike say ants). That's why most parasites on earth does not kill their hosts or can produce millions within a single host. Xenomorph reproduction is very inefficient.

@@wgemini4422 You realise it's just a movie..? You're overthinking this stuff. And even if they were real, I don't think that they would be thinking stuff like we humans do. ☺️✌️

They should have lowered the Rate of Fire on those guns. One round could go through several Xenos. Only armored targets needed such a high RoF. Going bang-bang-bang like a Bofors gun would have been enough to defend those tunnels with much ammo left over after the first wave.

Where did all of those rounds wind up at? In the ship's hull?

Begs the question why didn't the Marines use armed drones to recon the base?
