Great job!!! I'd add some reflective light strips for safty and shoulder straps which are connected with clips and can be hidden away whole riding . Love it!

Ended up using some metal bathroom hooks, 1€ a piece, on a piece of wood that was protected from water and rain with marine varnish (lacquer ? How do you say ?) . Not super sexy but i'm satisfied. Very inexpensive.

I used 1/8" doorskin 3 layer plywood for the back piece . Light , strong and the fabric is attached with small screws and lock nuts to the rack hangers at the top and external belts at the bottom.

Hey man im about to try making my own panniers for a long term tour with waterproof nylon. Does the back plate strengthen the load bearing capacity of the material at all? I don't want to buy it if it isnt necessary.

Nice! Yeah I would say that the back-piece helps, it keeps everything rigid and is worth it.
