How soon after the injury would you do this test? Having a fall you would expect weakness for a good few weeks whilst recovering.....

What happens when it's just swelling? My left shoulder is injured and is confirmed that it is a cuff injury (but swelling). My right shoulder seems to also be acting up now (feeling like it's just tense and weird to move). Now I don't know if it's just gym workouts or an injury. So how can I tell if it's just swelling? Because I did your test, and I was fine.

@@richardlafleur3891 Yes. So I went to my physiotherapist and I found out I do have an injury. Except, its just swelling in the rotator cuff. Meaning, I/you hurt our arm by working out, lifting, etc... Doing exercises to help gain the muscle back in the cuff is what you have to do to heal it (basically making it stronger than before). PLEASE see a physiotherapist before doing random workouts because it will hurt it more and may result in a tear.

I had a patient who came in with a trapesiuz strain also has muscle power of shoulder over all 3-/5 MMT. she had difficulty with bringing the arm down in a controlled manner. she was almost dropping it down. but she returned after two days again for the treatment where she was able to take the hand behind her head with minimal difficulty. if the drop arm test was positive and she had a tear, she would not have been able to do the complete movement the next day. My question is it possible the test becomes positive even with severe rotator cuff strain not always have to be a tear ?

I pass a wide range of RC tests without pain. I can pass this test as well, but I have pain at the top and bottom of the deltoid. If I continue to raise the arm from straight out to 45°up (still protruding straight out the side of my body) the pain becomes very severe. Any thoughts? Do I go straight to a specialist, and what kind if so? (Pain started 6 weeks ago and is gradually getting worse even though I've been resting it.)

Why all of the drop arm test for shoulder shown in youtube are arms on side ways .. 😢.. my problem is when im dropping my arm on the lateral position. It hurts evertime im stopping the drop in the middle.. position.. somewhere at 90degree position?. I want to know the problem ... and can it be treated by exercise or need a surgery?

Please note pain is not necessarily the key symptom with this test… key test is more in line with weakness. Hope that you can be properly assessed to help answer your questions

I have an extremely painful shoulder with very limited range of movement. The physio didn't even perform this test on me and I've just done it and it is positive. They are trying to fob me off and say it's a frozen shoulder but it's not. I'm having to pay hundreds of £s to get a private MRI done because they won't do one on me. Any ideas or pointers on what I can say to them so they can actually take me seriously?

A controversial test, it is better to consider it in conjunction with others, and not in isolation. Variants of a complete rupture of the RC have long been described, for example, in baseball players, with good function due to the structure of the joint and the capabilities of the deltoid muscle, and only a little pain. Conversely, in Parsonage-Turner syndrome, the RC is intact (on the MRI), but function in the shoulder is severely affected (falling shoulder is positive) and pain is reminiscent of the symptoms of a ruptured RC. The shoulder is sometimes a mystery!!
