This presentation provides an introduction to Chapter 3 of the book titled: SIMPLE-G: A Gridded Economic Approach to Analysis of Sustainability of the Earth’s Land and Water Resources, edited by Iman Haqiqi and Thomas Hertel, and published by Springer. Chapter 3 introduces the economic theory underpinning the gridded economic analysis in SIMPLE-G. Gridded analysis is essential when examining location-specific policies and shocks affecting land and water resources. In addition to examining the local impacts of these policies, it allows for analysis of spillover effects to other locations. The presentation highlights the key economic equations governing grid level responses to technological change in the presence of perfect labor mobility, as well as the case of an upward sloping labor supply curve. This highlights the importance of considering labor markets when undertaking analysis of land and water scarcity and impacts.
