Spear fundamentals
Dou Qiang - shaking spear
Dou qiang is one of the first drills we learn to get used to the spear and learn power generation. lots of people confuse the spear and use it like a weight lifting tool - simply adding resistance to movement to increase power.
This is not the case! In internal styles we use the term ‘finding power’ or Jiao jing (找勁). We use the spear to find power.
With this drill, we try to shake the spear. Initially you shake yourself to move the spear ‘yi Shen dai qiang’ 以身帶槍 - using the body to lead the spear. But you will eventually feel the wave of the spear comes back at you. It can easily disrupt your power and rhythm. At this point you need to learn sensitivity and how to combine with the power of the spear, and the spear will lead the body 以槍帶身 ‘yi qiang dai shen’. What happens is you will have the wave go from body to spear to body again, until you find a resonance, where the power will be greatest and most efficient.
This is like when a singer is sensitive to an instrument and sings at the same frequency, in tune and achieves resonance. That moment is obvious to the trained.
