Hey Mathias, I have a question regarding training sessions. For someone who is in off season, what would be more beneficial having 3 running sessions and 1 lower body gym session or 2 running sessions and 2 lower body gym. This is for an amateur runner who plays sport but has never focused on sprinting properly. Thank you in advance.

Yeah It's pretty normal for the tracks here to be in the middle of a city, or not far from it. Maybe that is because we have so many hills and mountains. Not so much left over flat space outside the cities. Either way it is nice to not have to travel too far.

those 20 min that you take to rest what are you doing?just sitting?isnt it dangerous for indury if you take that much time off?
@hovejoha
Жыл бұрын
First I'll sit down and relax. Maybe hydrate a little bit. After about 10 minutes I'll start to move around a little. With 5 minutes to go I'll do some kneelifts, some hamstring activation. 3 minutes to go I'll do a shot acceleration to get the legs going. Then I'm ready to go again. It's not dangerous to have long breaks as long as your core temperature does not drop too much and as long as it is not too cold outside.

Do you see a correlation between sprint endurance (elastic/fascia driven training modality) and pure explosivness (Vertical jump/broad jump)? Or in other words, do you think the first one can significantly improve the second one?
@hovejoha
3 жыл бұрын
I believe "explosiveness" in some ways can give the impression of better speed endurance. Let's say you have a top speed of 10m/s You can only maintain 9m/s (90% of max) for so long. If higher explosiveness causes a higher top speed of 11m/s, 9m/s is now 82% of max, and you will be able to "endure" that same speed for longer. Hence I think they are correlated, but good speed endurance does not cause better explosiveness. Explosiveness does not cause better speed endurance at 90%, but it will increase the speed you can endure. I also believe naturally explosive types will be less efficient at 90% than naturally elastic types.
@svenschroeder4344
3 жыл бұрын
@@hovejoha that's also an interesting way to think about it. Im more thinking about it in terms of a training modality. So even if a higher speed endurace does not lead to a higher explosive output, the high amount/volume of fast ground contacts could lead to an improvement in explosivness. My reasoning would be that it enhances the stretch-shortening cycle, builds better reflexive muscle action, trains relaxation/contraction timing, builds foot strength and over months should lead to positive tendon adaptions. So my question was more intended to go in the direction of: "Do you see a better/worse explosive ouput with speed endurance training in the mix?" Of course its difficult to evaluate because fatigue can mask fitness, but often you can feel if something has a positive or negative impact. As more of a team-sport athlete I dont wanna "waste" time for a training thay could potentially dont transfer at all. At the end you only have a certain amount of "training money" you can spend each week, so I want to spend it wisely. Still its kinda interesting and would be a novel/new stimulus.
@hovejoha
3 жыл бұрын
@@svenschroeder4344 Aah I understand your question better now. I think you are right that the high amount of fast ground contacts can be beneficial to explosiveness and elasticity in the way that you describe. But as you also mention you have only a certain amount of "training money" to spend in a week. Running such long sprints is very anaerobic and causes a lot of lactic, and thus it is very taxing and will increase recovery time. Because of this I might believe time will be better spent working on shorter sprints and short explosive work without so much lactic for team athletes. I myself will spend most of my time doing shorter sprints for explosiveness most of the year, and then do a speed endurance period as specific competition preparation to endure the 200m.

I would be pretty dang careful with that and take a week off if it hurts while walking around. If it’s only with sprinting I’d get on the steps and do eccentric calf raises. Also from the sound of doing it from time to time maybe you should change to more frequently but much less volume at first I’m not sure what you do in a day but I would do half but do it more frequently at least for now you can always decide to do it longer when it’s felt fine
