Sometimes we want to play loud strokes (accents) when we're drumming, and sometimes we want to play quieter strokes (taps). Many times, those strokes come immediately after the other, so we need to know how to quickly stop the stick and play a healthy downstroke. I say healthy because there is a way to play these that has you gripping the stick tightly, smacking the drum with that tight grip, and absorbing the shock of that into your hand, wrist and arm. That is the unhealthy way. The healthy way is all about playing a free stroke, and then pulling the stick into the palm when it starts to bounce back up to you. When you do that, you'll avoid taking the shock into your arm.
