Applied for the position as prison officer back in 1980 but quickly discovered how depressing and boring and the conditions and the working environment and pay made me not to even consider going ahead with the position and to this day I have never regretted it ie I became a firefighter! 😊

Its funny, that i applied to be a fireman and a Prison Officer at the same time i got in the Prison Service and done 20 years. The plus points were a free house and a good free pension that i enjoy now..

I started at strangeways in 1975, after training I was posted to the Isle of Wight CatA jail, nothing like strangeways in any shape or form

I was a Governor grade for my last 10 years service and remained in the Prison officers Association till l retired. I was a committee member in 2 prisons, so l knew the rules!

And quite frankly you shouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near the POA as a Governor grade. The POA was in the pockets of Governors for years!

How did 'left wing MPs' have the 'whip hand' in 1980?

Think this episode was filmed in either late 78 or 79 but released in 1980 but still not sure

@jakhelmills3942 If you are responding to my question, yes it was filmed in late 1979 but my question actually was, under the Thatcher government, how did the left wing supposedly have the 'whip hand', according to one of the screws in that episode. How much power did the 'left' actually have in '79/'80? That is what I was wondering about.
