I got a job at a place that made plastic pucks that go to pool filters. The dude who hired me, during the interview, said that we could never have any sick days or days off. I asked “what if I’m bleeding out of my eyes?” And he pointed over to a metal table and said “I had a stroke right over there, fell down and gut my head on the table, woke up an hour later and got back to work, never took a sick day.” _I was disturbed by the idiocy of this statement._ I mentioned how I was less than a week from my kid being born, again the manager (not the owner) said, in a boastful manor, “i gave 5 kids, I was here at work for all 5, never taken a day off.” I was hoping this guy was exaggerating to make a point, but couldnt shake the feeling that this was true. Later that week I started my first day, 12 hour shifts sitting on a stool next to a giant Japanese made machine that shoots hot flaming hot plastic discs for me to inspect and sort by quality. After around 4 hours on my first day, I started getting an intense headache. I asked a co worker if they had any aspirin or some shit, and they mentioned how everyone gets headaches from the fumes off the plastic melting machines. In that moment I realized, the man who hired me, a guy who wasn’t even the owner but was just a mid lvl grunt worker, had been huffing fuckin toxic plastic fumes to the point that he thought it was a good and proud thing to miss the most important moments of your life, and to risk your own mortal health, all to make fuckin caps to some pool filter doodad. I stood up from my stool, walked over to the retarded manager guy, and told him I quit. He tried some ego trip shit on me where he said I had to write out WHY I was quitting, and i wrote out almost exactly what I said in this comment, hoping it would get through to him. I gave him my piece of paper saying why I was a pussy or whatever he thought was happening. And he walked out and opened the gate so I could drive out, looking like he was ashamed of me or something. From that moment on, ive started noticing everytime some dumb fuck person has pride in a job that is not worthy of any pride. I worked with a janitor who lived across the street from the building we cleaned. When a tornado was hitting the school, he chose to stay in the school and protect computers rather than walk across the street and help his wife and kids. Because being a janitor took priority. Some people are dumb as rocks and don’t know that they should be ashamed, not proud of this idiocy.

I worked in a whole sale shipping warehouse that also had retail locations throughout the city. They were weedshops so we naturally attracted loser shithead employees, they always blew off work and my boss would ask me to cover shifts. Did it once to be helpful. Then it kept happening. So eventually, i would just squeeze the situation for everything i could, id just grab something i wanted to buy and id be like "im taking this a bonus for bailing this place out today.". Then i eventually started just saying pay me double my wage and ill do it whenever you need, but thats the price, this isnt my problem and i hate doing it. He eventually had to get me to do it at that price. After that i told him i want triple my wage to do it. At that point he finally snapped and started bitching to me about how i was taking advantage of him. Looked him right in the face and was like "this whole thing is predicated on us taking advantage of eachother. I needed a job to pay my rent, you took advantage and offered me a wage that lets afford that and not much else. Now you keep putting yourself into these situations by hiring these stoners and being there friend and not boss, im taking advantage because everytime i do i get to treat myself to brand name groceries, and id rather not do it. Im asking for money to incentivize you to find a solution not involving me. Felt good to throw that dynamic right back in his face
