In her Biography, Life Is a Banquet, Ms. Russell noted that she took to Auntie Mame so easily because she felt the character was that of her own sister..

Well that would be a neat trick since Rosalind Russell originated the role on stage in 1956, then Start in the film adaptation in 1958. For some unknown reason, Lucy decided to Do the boom adaptation of the 1966 Broadway musical 'Mame'!

OH!! Angela Lansbury starred in the Broadway musical Mame! I stand corrected, She did claimed it La Lansbury "stole" the part from her! LoL Even though, Miss Lansbury could sing and... Well, Lucy good warble. BUT! She did have Beatrice Arthur (original Vera in the '66 Broadway play) as her co-star to soften the caustic blow.

How can you compare something like Susan Hayward's last line in "I Want to Live" ("How the hell would you know"?) to any of the lines in any comedy?

Auntie Mame the character bugs me. For all her carefree bohemian ways, Mame still knew that you needed money to survive. Mame immediately hooked up with the rich man from the South to assure she could keep up her bohemian ways. At the same time she used her bohemian ways to take the high ground over the Connecticut upper middle family who tried to pollute her nephew. Auntie Mame to me shows a lot of the same prejudice she accuses others of showing.
