Megiddo was an important site in the ancient world and archaeologists have unearthed some 26 layers of ruins at the site. It is a “Tel”, a man-made mound created by many generations of people rebuilding on the same spot. It is at a strategic place located along the Carmel Mountain Ridge and overlooking the Jezreel Valley. Several historic battles have taken place at the site. There is a tunnel to a spring, designed so that Megiddo residents would not have to leave the safety of the city walls to obtain water. Although it is referred to some 12 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, it is perhaps most famous among Christians for its mention by the Book of Revelation (where it is called “Armageddon”, translated into Greek from the Hebrew “Har Megiddo”, with the word Har meaning a hill) as a battleground for the final battle between good and evil.
