I'm impressed by your mixed selection of traditional favorites and lesser known (in the English-speaking world) international ones. One thing I have have to check out are the films of Yasujirō Ozu,, whom you seem to rate higher than those of Kurosawa (at least in this year). Of course, I wish you had given at least an honorable mention to Nights of Cabiria, my favorite Fellini film (and partly the inspiration for the musical Sweet Charity). Cabiria, is an outstanding film, compelling from beginning to end, and though not as bleak as some Fellini's other films, it invests your completely in it.

Gotta watch that number 1! Some other films i would consider for my list would be : Don quixote (kozintsev), The lower depths, The incredible shrinking man, Nights of cabiria, Wild Strawberries, Le notti bianche … Given your taste for westerns am a bit surprised you did not include one of the B westerns of ´57 : 40 guns? Tin star? 3:10 to yuma? Tall T maybe?

A great list and a great year. I'm happy to agree with number one for a personal reason. I once had a Russian girlfriend who celebrated their Victory Day (May 9th) like many Russians do-by watching this very film, quietly crying, and remembering the relatives who perished in the war. There was nothing overtly patriotic, let alone nationalistic, about it-just sadness about the insanity of war.

12 ANGRY MEN at Number 1 for this year (one of my 💯 Favorite Films), followed by QUATERMASS 2 (again, the whole Hammer Quatermass Trilogy is in my Top 💯 Favorite Films). Also very close behind: PATHS OF GLORY.

I have to check out your top two as those are the only ones I haven't seen. My top 2 from this list would be A Face in the Crowd and The Sweet Smell of Success.

12 angry Men really reinforces the idea of guilt beyond all reasonable doubt. By the end of the picture I was pretty certain that the kid was guilty but that I would vote to acquit.

Throne of Blood was kinda a let down for me. Like other Samurai movies by Kurosawa more. Especially Sanjuro. Maybe I just don't like Shakespear!? A lot of foreign films in this list! Cool!

I don't think Burt Lancaster plays the owner of a newspaper. I think he's an influential columnist. That's how I remember it.
