Great list. The film the Innocents is my favorite scary movie, so good. I remember watching it on television when I was eight, scared me so much.

Also in 1961 : - Through a Glass Darkly (Ingmar Bergman) - Accattone (Pier Paolo Pasolini) - Lola (Jacques Demy) - La Notte (Michelangelo Antonioni) - The Misfits (John Huston) - The Guns of Navarone (J. Lee Thompson)

A favorite of mine was a Judgement at Nuremberg , a movie where a judge was trying to understand why did the German people support Hitler and did they know of the atrocities going on in their name . Its a very nuanced film which explored every side of that time , and any time you get Spencer Tracy , Maximilian Schell ,Burt Lancaster , Judy Garland , and Marlene Dietrich all in one movie how bad can it be .

I’d put Last Year at Marienbad in my top 10 because it’s maddening and I love it for it

It feels like 1961 was not a strong year for great films. A couple that I like but maybe not quite top 10 are One, Two, Three by Billy Wilder and a little known British film called Whistle Down the Wind with Alan Bates and Haley Mills.

Finally Harry selects a Bunuel film as the Top film. This is necessary, as Belle de Jour is not given a top-ten spot (though it's certainly a classic Catherine Denueve film), and though Los Olividados is ranked, Ensayo de un Crimen (another from Bunuel's great Mexican period) is not.

In Spanish "hacer fotos"(to take photos) ts an euphemism to mean "show your pants", in general used by the mothers to reconvene their daughters who are sitting without paying much attention to their skirt. So, "The Last Supper" scene of Viridiana is a, probably untranslatable",visual play on words.

Huh, in my top 10 of 1961 is definitely "The Guns of Navarone" with Niven and Peck in the lead roles.

1961 . .the young savages Burt Lancaster, the title sequences alone should have won an Oscar.

i like your list : but not so keen on rowdy westerns, so i would drop Comancheros and introduce Placido by Luis Garcia Berlanga … then add Last year in Marienbad in the place of Victim... and i haven´t seen the exiles, so Lets say La Notte instead (although i would like to re-watch la notte to see how i feel about it today) .. love the series!

I do have a weakness for rowdy westerns (or westerns in general). Not Seen Placido. I'll have to give it a look!

@@1-2many yeah, i have noticed you like westerns! … as i get older, me not so much for some reason (with some exceptions : Shane, Searchers...) although i do think it´s a very cinematic genre with the use of landscape etc... re-watched Rio Bravo recently and was shocked to find i was a bit bored by it! (although i must say i did enjoy Dino Martino & Walter Brennan) Hope you like Placido .. i love quite a few of Berlanga´s movies although he has not been really appreciated abroad as much as Buñuel
