My dealership owns one of the few 6,000 horsepower dynos that can be found. You have never experienced what horsepower feels like until it makes a 3500/3600 go to work. We use 3516B/C's to power ships. They have proven themselves reliable and fairly economical engines that are easy to work on. They go for 12000 hours with very basic maintenance before the top ends need overhauling (really only the cylinder heads and a few ancillaries like the turbos, oil cooler, ect). It's not uncommon for one to have 50,0000 hours on it and still be going strong.

I rebuild 3516s for 793 and 789 haul trucks. The mine sites typically demand 25k hours or one million gallons of fuel burn between rebuilds. We have to flip the block over using the bridge crane in the shop in order to get at the main caps and crank. Definitely scary the first few times you do it but you get used to it after a while. These things shake the ground when they run on dyno.

@@speed150mph as for turbos, yes I agree. The clutch was was picky as hell about oil. You'd learn quick to make sure your filters ain't plugged. They were just starting to try out the 3512E when the down turn hit in 2015 and we had a mutual parting of employment. Ours we set to pull 2250hp@1950 rpm. Great content. Finally a Cat engine I can chime in on. Lol. Work for a Cat dealer, in power systems, mainly natural gas engines. 3500’s are probably my favourite engine to work on. Mostly everything can be installed by hand, other than large dampers. Ours are mostly connected to nat. gas compressors. Cams last forever, have seen 100,000 hour plus cams. OH’s are done in place. Strip block, jack or crane up 6-8”. Way easier to do mains. I could go on. Saying that, we mostly work on G3600’s. 6, 8, 12 and 16 cylinders. 11.5 diameter pistons. Again, great content. Cheers👍🏻

I was one of the engineers at a gambling boat operation in the mid nineties, we had two boats powered by 3508's. One used two of them for propulsion through Twin Disc gearboxes. The other one had four 3508's; it was diesel electric propulsion via a paddlewheel turned by two locomotive traction motors, also had a 300hp dc motor powered thruster at each end. When we cruised, we had two engines paralleled for propulsion, and one carried the house load. Back then, the Chicago area Cat dealer we worked with charged $5000 per hole for a center section overhaul, wonder what that price would be now? 🙂 BTW, since you like the 3500's for relative ease of maintenance, you would love an EMD 645 or 710.

From my understanding, the 3612's are odd-firing. They are at a 50° V angle with 120° spaced crank throws but non-split crankpins, resulting in uneven firing intervals of 50° and 70°. The uneven firing is probably why the 3612's shake so much.

Like #1001. When I did vibration analysis in a paper mill, I had to check a Cat 3512 generator once a month, the bearings on the generator. The engine had a coolant heater on it so it was at 120+ deg F x 24hrs / day. The block was hot enough that you could not hold your hand on it for more than 2~3 seconds. So when the power went down, that sucker started up and went to the governor almost immediately, 1800 rpms.

I used to rebuild all the 3500 series engines. From the 3508 to the 3524. Most of the time I was on the 3524's (for all the 797B's here in Alberta, Canada). Also got into a couple C175's (3600) when the 797F came out.

Since Cat owns EMD now do you ever end up dealing with those big GM designed 2-strokes?

That is super cool. It would be interesting to work on the big engines, I haven't seen one in a long time.

I worked at. Cat shop in the early 1960's that had a rail siding so we got to work on some locomotive engines(which are just big gen sets really). Could you do a video on these engines some time ?

Great video man. So unique. Love new cat engines. I chuckled at 69 litres. I wonder about the engineering. LMAO

9:20 Couple things to note here: First, 13:1 compression? That's awfully low for a Diesel. Although that's since changed-the 3508C has 14:1 compression and the newer 3512E and 3516E are 16:1. Also, as of 2022 the 3508C is still 170 bore by 190 stroke, but the 3512E and 3516E are 170 bore by 215 stroke. The 3512E is now 58.5L and the 3516E is 78L in displacement.

"Intake and exhaust, run down the valley together, to make it more narrow." Nothing like breathing a ton of hot air. I wonder how much better these would perform, if it breathed like a normal engine?

Hi Josh. Thanks for the great video. I’ve done a lot of work on the 3500 series engine. They are pretty reliable. Have you worked on the CAT G3600 gas engines? I know you used to work on generator engines a while back

I think Cat also had older v16 mechanical engine called the d399 which was also really big (don't know what is the displacement tho). I think they were the biggest one before the 35xx series.....

Would love to have you explain the cat Marine engines differences from the truck engines. I have a Marine 400 Cummins big cam in a 1977 peterbilt 359. Whole different overhaul kit. Wierd to me but designed different.

The main difference maybe on the cooling, injector pump and the oil pan sump. For cooling, shipboard engines do liquid to liquid heat exchange. No radiator. Just a heat exchanger. For the injection pump, shipboard engines typically don't respond fast unlike truck board engines. The pump doesn't surge on fuel when you raise rpm. For the oil pan, shipboard engines need to deal with waves that effect the oil on the pan. Ship constantly rolls on the waves creating a problem when using a truck board oil pan as it is shallow. Shipboard engines tend to have deep oil pans to mitigate this problem. Shipboard engines enjoy unlimited accessories as they are not restricted to weight and space.

I remember reading marine engines do more time at wide open throttle than road engines. They probably change a lot between the two.
