The 5X5 workout's goal is quite simple: Build strength fast. This is best utilized when you've hit a plateau in your other, regular workouts. Switch to the 5X5 for a couple of months (or however long you need) to break through that ceiling and then switch back to your regular routines to find pleasantly surprising results!
How it's done:
Day 1
Squats - 5 sets of 5 reps
Bench Press - 5 sets of 5 reps
Barbell Rows - 5 sets of 5 reps
Day 2
Squats - 5 sets of 5 reps
Overhead Press - 5 sets of 5 reps
Deadlifts - ONLY 1 set of 5 reps
Rest time between sets: 2-3 minutes
Take a day of rest between each workout so your muscles can recover and grow. So basically, you'll end up doing 3 days of workouts a week. If you want, you can add in a couple of lighter exercises at the end of each workout, such as crunches or calf raises.
