I use two neodymium magnets. Just glue some cork to both sides of them and attach them to the bridge. You can even use smaller ones and move them around to change the sound.

Great idea! I need a mute for a banjo, usually use violin mutes, but I don't have any, but I've got lots of Neodymium magnets. I'll try it out.

Hi Alison, another good mute you can get is the Spector mute. It's a little brown mute that sits between the A and D strings like the Tourte, but it doesn't rattle like the Tourte because it's sort of wedged in rather than popped on. You slide it up to meet the bridge to mute, and slide it back when done. I really like it for orchestral situations - it doesn't mute quite so much but the effect is noticeable, and you don't have to worry about losing it as it stays wedged in very well.

Somewhere on this planet, the inventor of auto-focus just jumped off a bridge... Thank you nevertheless for the mutes roundup! A sound comparison with/without both mutes would have been great, though.

I am also obsessed rather in need of the mute coz we have small rooms and homes i dont want to let outsiders hear my practice; its not a good music by a beginner anyway.I wouldn't want to hear others practicing loudly such way either.Its is too loud; I am wrapping things around the bridge to mute the sound not gett. nything right but now i get an idea of what kinda thing it should be to place; In headphones it sometimes hurt ears in some videos bec of the loudness really thn hv to reduce volume

it took me about a week to get the aproximate 1st position notes succesfully, but sometimes they still end up a little bit higer or lower, wich I correct mid note, or with vibrato, and on the 2nd,3rd and 4th positions its still very hard to find them. But now that I said that I realised I never found notes via visual, because my teacher didn't use that sticker technique, it was more of an audio hit and miss process, that's how now I can find notes without having ever hearing them before.

What’s your view on loop E strings and ball e strings? One violinist studying in London Music Academy looked at me as if I was a freak because I used ball ends. She said the loop is essential for serious players. Maybe you have covered this in another video. Can’t find much info.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

Sounds pretentious and utter nonsense! It doesn't matter whether you have bball or loop end. Either or. Same difference and same string. It will depend on what fine tuner you have as some can take both like mine, others will only take a loop or ball.
@nickdryad

That’s what I though. It seems that finding loop strings is a dark art anyway.

nickdryad, I thought her comment was quite arrogant and effite. I might have mentioned that when she bows on G, I notice a foul odor. I might have critcised her sub-student grade instrument, pawnshop bow, cheap case, cheesy stand, broomstick pegs, tailpiece, bridge, chinrest, bow hair color, rosin, strings, chest rest (or lack thereof), soundpost placement, clothing, hairstyle, unprofessional musicianship (ask to see her union card) and especially her manners. I am entirely self-taught, have only been fiddling for 4 years, so am still learning much about string selection. I fitted Knilling Perfection (planetary geared) pegs & eliminated all tailpiece tuners 2-3 years ago on my 60s John Jezek 4/4. I have noticed that some string sets come with ball ends on GDA but have only a loop E. Since I also have MANY guitars, I've never had trouble finding a ball from an old guitar string set to fit inside the loop, replacing the absent E ball. You could do the same; recovering the ball from an old string set you are discarding.

Hahaha I love corny jokes like that! Oh, Alison, I was playing my Violin today and one of my bow hair snapped. Is this normal? Should I just pull the snapped hair out or leave it hanging? It's kind of annoying though...

The usual little black orchestral mute is there when you need it on or off quickly. That seems to me its only advantage. They sould to me like the top of the bridge was rubber, or like the violin was wrapped in bubble wrap. Wood (often ebony) three-pronged mutes to a large extent retain the violin's 'woody' tune and are the only ones I really enjoy playing with.

@TheOnlineViolinTutor

+Eugene Berg An orchestra mute is not the same as a practice mute and you cant use one for the others purpose. An orchestra mute will only mute the sound appropriate for still playing and performing on stage. A practice mute will greatly reduce the decibel level of the violin.

I just covered the f-holes. 1.bp.blogspot.com/-iUUvLxz_1gE/VWRoIK16BQI/AAAAAAAADtc/9u-7Roe6YoU/s1600/DSC00002.JPG Now I'm gonna use your clothespin-will put some felt under it's jaws. The point is, I never played legato, because that makes her ring very loud. But my anxious portato didn't help me as much as the legato I prefer now. While connecting the notes, instead of lifting the bow, I learn to avoid imprecise intonation* much faster. But unmuted legato is just awful on the neighbors. They didn't complain yet, but I can't be responsible for giving them headaches. Violin beginners are a toll on other's nerves anyhow-I know I am. I'm also sure, beginners of any instrument should not force themselves to play piano or even pianissimo, which won't come out relaxed. I hate all unnecessary electrification in music, so muting is a must. By the way, I decided to sew my violin Anna a cute little felt sweater. This should mute the whole corpus a bit. _______________________________________ * Imprecise intonation clearly to hear in my 3 violin videos. It pains me! At some point these clips are gonna vanish in a black hole, because I won't be able to take it any longer and be responsible for that tonal internet infestation. LOL **$§§§)(o)(§§§$** ADDENDA: Just had 2 clips on the bridge, left and right, which did a major effect. The left one snared on the low C from the G-string, so I underlaid some felt where now both clips rest on. This felt changed the muted sound to very soft which I like very much. I think it mutes the bridge even a bit more, because those laundry clips have dents and now the felt grabs the bridge allover. Finally screechy Anna is gently whispering and it sounds very sweet. It almost makes me cry. :o) THANKS, Alison, for the great tips!
