Jervaulx Abbey is a grade 1 listed ruins set in the Wensleydale valley of North Yorkshire, England. Established in 1156 as one of the great Cisterian Abbeys, Jervaulx had close ties to Byland Abbey and was dedicated to St Mary.
The abbey thrived in its location close to the river Ure, and in its prosperity owned half the valley. The land was dedicated to farming and was the original home for Wensleydale cheese, a cheese traditionally made from ewes milk. Jervaulx was also renowned for breeding horses, a tradition that is still going today in nearby Middleham.
Today the abbey is privately owned and used for functions such as weddings. It is open to the public everyday from dawn until dusk, with an honesty box for donations towards the upkeep. I can honestly say this abbey was one of the highlights of Yorkshire! The location is stunning, the ruins are magnificent, and tranquility is guaranteed.
