Great song!! Sometimes overlooked, this is actually Charlie Thomas on lead as Charlie also sang "When My Little Girl Is Smiling". Love this song in stereo, but the mono 45 version is my favorite because it gives you an extra round of la la's at the end where the stereo version fades early.

I have a discography of the drifters public in the 70's giving all the lead vocals on each drifters songs, it states Rudy Lewis sang lead on both songs

Having been to 7 islands in the Caribbean, I'm always struck by the MILD similarities to "island" or reggae music of a few 1955-1965 hits, the Corsairs "Smokey Places" being the most obvious example. Great piano work here as well!

Correct version: "I'm always struck by the MILD similarities of "island" or reggae music to a few 1955-1965 hits, the Corsairs "Smokey Places" being the most obvious example. Great piano work here as well!"

When the British group The Searchers covered this, they changed the lyric to "your warm sweet kiss" instead of "tasty" which was deemed too racy at the time! They actually had the hit version (depressingly)!

“The Searchers actually had the hit version” among white Americans, you mean. I had no idea that there was any version other than the original, till now. I first heard it in Amsterdam, in 1961. Had the Searchers been born, yet?

In my view this is superior to the Searchers version.

Right so right! That lead voice is RUDY LEWIS! The same voice that did UP ON THE ROOF! One site shows this song featured with the Clyde McPhatter- Drifters. This is NOT the group that did SWEETS FOR MY SWEET. They go back to the mid fifties and did the Christmas classic WHITE CHRISTMAS. Sweets for my Sweet is a 60's song and the line up was way different and featured Rudy Lewis on lead.
