BTW, the 'flying' camera perspective when in the pov of the Evil was a brilliant technique developed by Sam Raimi. They strapped a camera to the middle of a wooden board and then had two guys running while holding either end of the board. It gave an eerie gliding effect to the shot that could otherwise only be achieved with very expensive steady-cam rigs.

This is my favourite horror movie. And I watch EVERY reaction to it. LOVED YOURS. you really get it. So many great elements. The effects, the sound design, the camera work, and Baby Bruce. Linda's iconic "We're gonna get you.." is on par with Nightmare on Elm Street's "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you..". The fact this was basically a low-budget student film is astonishing, considering its execution and cultural impact on the film industry, creating the whole "cabin in the woods" horror genre. FYI, Part 2 has a 10 minute recap of part 1 as the opening, but due to Sam Raimi not having rights to footage from the 1st film, they had to reshoot, recast, and simplify the storyline so people who hadn't seen it could catch up. So that will assuage your confusion. I make sense of it by thinking of it as Ash having a nightmare about the events of the first film (up until he wakes up in part 2 in the chair), and dreams are often not a faithful retelling of events. The fact that Ash's mind is also greatly impacted makes him a semi-unreliable narrator, so that works too. Ash is one of the best final girls ever. Imagine having to kill your best friend, sister, and girlfriend? His character development throughout the franchise is iconic. Also the actresses weren't having fun, they had an awful time making this - they had to wear opaque contacts so they were blind, and were injured a lot because of that.

When this film was first released at the Canns Film Festival in 1982, Stephen King was in attendance, and gave the movie a great review, calling it the "most ferociously original film of the year"

This was Sam Raimi's first full-length movie, and it took him and his team many years to get this made. They poured so much energy and creativity into this movie, but it was also an exercise in patience. There are shots in the finished thing that are literally years (and states!) apart.

I accidentally watched this when I was 8 years old (it was back in the days of video rentals and the store put the wrong tape in the box) and it traumatised me for years 😂 The comedy was 100% intentional. Sam and Bruce were huge fans of the 3 Stooges, and the slapstick only becomes more obvious as the trilogy progresses.

Just discovered your channel so you might have seen some of these... but you mentioned filling in gaps in your horror education: While there are 1000s of great horror films, I've compiled an essential viewing list of genre-creating/defining, iconic, impactful horror films in pop culture. I'm talking the BIG films that everyone on the street knew about. These films inform every other horror film/trope, and mostly spawned franchises. If you start with these, everything else will fall into place. 1961 Psycho 1968 Rosemary's Baby 1968 Night of the Living Dead 1972 Deliverance 1973 The Exorcist 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1975 Jaws 1976 The Omen 1978 Halloween 1979 Alien 1980 Friday the 13th 1981 The Evil Dead 1982 Poltergiest 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street 1996 Scream 1999 The Blair Witch Project 2004 Saw 2007 Paranormal Activity Plus one of my personal favourites: The Haunting 1963 (was adapted into the netflix series House on Haunted Hill)

Evil Dead 2 is a soft reboot because, others can correct me if im wrong, i think there was some legal stuff with the first movie so he basically had to remake it.

Question for ya: are the 2013 and 2023 versions directly connected to the first three and TV series, or are they a separate narrative without links to the Ash movies?
@dennisang1432

@@JoeFF85 The Ash vs. Evil Dead tv series directly links to the original The Evil Dead trilogy. The 2013 and 2023 versions do not link with Ash but they happened in the same universe. 2023 version will explain the different looks of Book of the Dead.

Evil dead 2 is a masterpiece. But i always have a soft spot for the OG as a masterclass of low budget horror. Also, if you ever watch Evil dead 2, keep in mind the first 15 minutes are a remake of this one, as Sam Raimi did not have the rights to own movie

Fun Fact: the characters are from Michigan. Its one of the few horror films series that is set my home state. Really cool stuff man! Hope you will continue the series. If you do, you're in for a treat. They all are fun and interesting. They're all wacky and wild to watch. What makes it entertaining is to hear the Deadites, as they're called, just likes to screw with people and talk shit. Gotta love the mix of horror and black comedy. Also... if you see a book that is made of dead skin and human blood, leave that thing alone! That thing is dangerous lol.

By the time you get through Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness the original trilogy really veers into horror-comedy. Evil Dead (2013) goes back to full horror and absolute gore. Evil Dead Rise (the most recent movie) stays mostly in the horror realm but does aim for chuckles in a couple of scenes. There’s also the Ash vs. Evil Dead television series which lasted 3 seasons and again takes the horror-comedy approach.
