The problem is social workers are underutilized because many don't understand their real function in the medical community. I've seen so many times they weren't included in these critical situations and then ending up having to be the only person who can untangle the birds nest that was created by everyone else.

our hospital has mandatory rounds in the morning with the patient's nurse, PT, social worker and the attending of that unit so that we are all on the same page about the discharge plan. Sometimes it is a pain to go to when you are busy but overall it has worked well as an integrated team. I am a hospitalist.

When i first became disabled, after my..5th? Hip surgery, social worker was visiting to clarify my rehab hospital stay. She noticed my wheelchair was REALLY old (i had an rx for one, but they're EXPENSIVE) She decided to get me a "new" one (used, for like 2 weeks by someone who then donated it) she surprised me with it while i was waiting for transport the rehab(nursing) hospital.i cried, it was so awesome! Social workers and case managers are not just necessary for so many of us, but often they're VERY awesome. Thanks for showing it! And thanks to all you social workers and case managers! Ps: babies are generally gross too lol

Anyone, who has seen first few poops knows babies are actually pretty gross. We just hide by taking cute or funny pics, so you other people will want to hold them, giving us a few precious seconds of not having to hold the baby. (Seriously though, most of the time it's annoying how everyone wants to touch and hold the newborn. Like, you can look but not touch! That thing can die so easily.)

Aaaay! Social work appreciation. My Mum's a social worker and you couldn't find a harder worker. She used to work in welfare here in Australia and dealt with chronic understaffing (sometimes she was the only in-person social worker servicing hundreds of thousands of people) and general terrible treatment (she was underpaid, extremely overworked, micromanaged and they refused to even take responsibility for an overwork injury she got from them) . Everyone who walked through the door in crisis went to her pretty much. She did everything from convince people over the phone to not commit suicide, to helping men and women escape DV situations and get the help they needed, to providing documentation for court cases. She counselled and looked our for countless homeless young people, had tens of thousands of dollars of welfare debt wiped from someone who needed the money, and had to coordinate between endless different services across the entirety of the country. She is a badass.

Truth haha. I think at my hospital there's so many role overlaps that people get confused... for example... I'm called a clinician and my primary role is therapy, psychosocial assessments, treatment plans and family meetings. I'm a social worker (LMSW-CC). We have discharge planners that function as case managers (ish) and are magic. To be a clinician you don't need an MSW, you can be an LCPC... they get called social workers all the time when they are not.... and I always have to correct patients because on one hand, I am a social worker but I don't function as one on unit despite doctors thoughts lol

Yeap!! I've had more than one social worker and they can be REALLY hit or miss. I think it's because the SW handling of their jobs affects the client so intensely that it feels like a miracle has occured if they manage to handle it correctly. This profession is made to support some of the most under-served ( not un- deserved!) folks. They tend to be vulnerable and since getting a helpful SW is so hit or miss so many people fall through the cracks. Then they keep falling. For sure you see people like this everyday but you may not know it.

@alliesong77
3 жыл бұрын
@@jenno5555 For me it was because nursing has a much more measurable outcome. You can tell if what you are doing is helping and you can see progress in your patients which is satisfying. With social work, it can be hard to tell, you can work with a person for months and have seemingly very little or just very slow progress. It doesn’t mean it’s not working but emotional recovery is non-linear so you have to be patient and be able to deal with people having setbacks. I found that really hard in terms of job satisfaction.
@adilabdulrahman9990

Hey I was thinking about either social work or nursing as a career. Is nursing better for an introverted person?
@alliesong77
Жыл бұрын
@@adilabdulrahman9990 I think either career could work for you. Both require people skills and social interaction but social work requires more counselling skills while nursing has more technical skills. Nursing is very diverse, and there are fields which may leave you feeling less socially drained like the OR for example.

Instead while I was in the ICU recovering from my heart stopping after having nonstop seizures from an allergic reaction to a medication I was just put on she kept accusing me of taking every hard drug known to man because of an experimental blood test they did on me without my knowledge. I've never done hard drugs and I had literally just been revived, and she wanted to blame it on hard drugs instead of the medication that actually did it to me. As soon as she told me, three days later, that it was an experimental test and "opps" I told everyone I want her far away from me and if she comes near me I'm calling security. She had been so adamant and trying to get me to admit to something that wasn't true for days while I was recovering. It was horrible.
