I feel you mate! I'm coming back to the La's every now and then and there's absolute no F*CKING doubt that Lee could have been above John Lennon's skill if he continued. I mean compare the self written songs from "The La's" to The Beatles' debut album. Then listen to the kitchen tape and you know that he was easily able to even top his own debut. "Tears in the rain" - what a f*cking tune! I'm playing that intro riff very often when I pick a guitar anywhere although it's so simple. But everything he does and did is nothing but timeless. I understand him. I'm a musician and songwriter myself. The problem is it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a song recorded in that "perfect way" as it is in your head when you write/compose it. Most musicians come to the point where they are like "F*ck it, let's just record it as good as possible and go ahead" but Lee never was like that. Unfortunately. Imagine he was and we would have like 10 or 20 albums of "The La's" right now, what a good world would it be to live in.
@thebetbetunderground9548

Tarik A. The world simply has a way of hiding perfection from us as cleverly as it could. I don't know why that is, but I have a guess that it's because we need to stay yearning, dreaming, chasing something somehow. And that's why we're talking about Lee Mavers now!

How is it that music, or more specifically, certain songs can affect you in the most surprising way? I absolutely love The LA's album. One of the best albums easily of all time in its entirety. One of the few albums I can put on start to finish and every song is a winner. Just these 2 guys playing right now seem ... very magical in the most natural way. I think is because I just realized these guys are the real deal. No tricks or gimmickry, they've got the goods and I'll be damned if they didn't deliver. The way they pull it off just the 2 of them is almost unbelievable. The way he improvises the guitar solo making noises with his voice gave me a chuckle at first, but that sounded amazing, spot on. I've got a tear rolling down my cheek but I'm not sure exactly why. Me thinks maybe the melancholy got to me ... yea, that's it, the melancholy. I can't believe I didn't go to see this band when they came to Los Angeles and it is really bugging me trying to remember what was going on in my life at that time that would have kept me from seeing them ... hmpf. Oh well, I know I tried but there is no way I could have seen or even known about every great band that came to town.

Mavers voice is an absolute gift. Even seeing him in Tesco's at Prescot doesn't take away the mystique! Did I mention the songwriting chops?? That we didn't get a 2nd and 3rd album is a real loss.

We never did get that follow up album 6 years later. Lee's still perfecting it. 😃

I love how you can hear the muffling of producers etc in the background, but as soon as mavers opens his mouth.... silence

yup ... best version I've seen ... someone should make a high quality recording of their best live performances. Would have loved to be at the concert for that night.

I knew Lee some years ago, was good friends with his son, sad to see him go down the drain, I still see him now & then as he lives just down the road In the Knowsley area of Liverpool, lost his wife his kids, he had/has some bad habbits, maybe he will pick his life up someday and get backinto music!

@@therealfodder You can make an album with all the songs that didn't make it in the first: I am the key, Knock me down, Clean Prophet, Come in come out, Man I'm only human, Callin' all, Endless, Who knows?, Over, Fishing Net, and many more
