After watching episode three and the backstory they told in that, I wish we had an entire episode devoted to tell more about her and her character as I feel we had a missed opportunity to have a proper background into the character and more on her motivations and what she did to survive in this world.

Interesting theory: Indonesia is a wheat flour exporter to the world, and they hint that this where the fungus was first found at the beginning of this episode. In the first episode Joel, Tommy, and Sarah listen in the radio about a disturbance in Jakarta, Indonesia Capital, where that flashback of this episode happens. If you notice during the first episode none of them eat anything made of wheat flour that day. There's no panckace left, they didn't eat the cookies the neighbors offered and Joel forgot to bring the cake, so probably this is how the infection spread to the whole world, through wheat flour and that's why they didn't get infected that day

I think that while Tess’s death in the game worked better it was still narratively fridging. In the game it functions as the moment when the proverbial training wheels come off, the tutorial section has ended, and now you are out in the world alone with this girl you have to protect. In the show, there is no “tutorial section” , so while it might not be Joel’s primary motivator it is still when he accepts the call to adventure.

so I've seen a couple specialists comment on the immediate bombing that professor in the beginning told to do and everyone says that it doesn't make sense to go for that as the first resort. it would be better to setup a quarantine and try to isolate the spread. an actual professor of micology commented the bombing could actually cause global spread of the infection, because explosions can propel the spores into the atmosphere, and that it's a more likely cause of the outbreak than contaminated flour. after the infection goes global though, the bombing makes sense and otherwise writers get a lot of compliments from specialists for doing their homework pretty well :)

If you are worried about fungal contamination of your food. Just remember the real grain contamination incident involving cordyceps was due to a whole lot of negligence at a flour factory. Where workers let grain stay on the floor of the processing plant for days or weeks and it was moist, then they scooped it up and chucked it into the processor. If it had been all processed when it arrived and the factory was not dirty and wet then it would not have happened.

My quick two cents since we are talking tropes. Your analysis on Fridging and Bury Your Gays being a function of proximity to the protagonist is spot on and very applicable to The Last of Us. As you may have noticed, the Crapsack World trope is also in effect and major themes of the series are loss and carrying on past that loss. On the people side of that loss, partners, friends, daughters (who started off as a protagonist before a protagonist switch!), are all going to die and you are going to worry about everyone since Plot Armor is going to be pretty darn flimsy and the likelihood of death is going to be high. (The non people side of loss, societal, material, etc, is fascinating in its own right but a topic for another time)

Great rection! I don't think Tess' death is fridging (it happens in the game too), because her death is not gonna be a primary motivation to Joel. I think narratively it's a way to portray how dangerus the world is, and to expose this danger (and the reality of it) to Ellie. But it still hurts, she was a great character and I really love the actress too. Can't wait to see your reaction to episode 3

I guess I will make a judgment in upcoming episodes on whether or not. I believe that chess is death was the primary motivator for Joel. Because right now I kind of think it was. I don't think he would have done this if he was on his own. He seems pretty motivated by self-preservation.

Tess' death and what happens later on in episode 3 drives Joel to pay more attention to the people he cares about, which will help us understand the actions he takes later on regarding Ellie. @@HSPaisley That's the crux of this troupe though, men in general are more self preservation oriented. Family as a loose term is what forces us to look beyond ourselves at greater issues, it's a troupe because its a believable/connectable reason from the male pov. the bread theory became true in the series, this theory explains that as flour creates fungus in bread when the bread is passed that could’ve be a reason for people to get infected, that’s why in episode one neither Joel or Sarah or Tommy eat things made out of flour and that’s why they don’t get infected like the majority of people. I only know about that theory as that far, but i wanted to open you that point of view on to how the infection won terrain. I hadn't heard of fridging before. It's interesting. I never really thought of representation from this sort of indirect non-malicious (probably in most cases these days) exclusion angle. I feel like some people here in the comments took issue with your take because it's easy to put more moral weight on the term than you (maybe) meant and more than I think we should. Well that and they love the game (as do I), have already decided the story is perfect, and post-hoc away all criticism. To be clear I'm not saying fridging is ever good, but I feel like it can range from pretty bad to morally neutral. While unfortunate and maybe technically fridging, considering Tess' death had a purpose and wasn't the end of good representation in the show, I think it rests close to, if not entirely in the morally neutral end. I'd say your point about gaming target audiences, and main characters that cater to that is valid, but it has slowly gotten much better in the last decade or so. In the case of The Last of Us, the type of person who would only want to play a game with that type of protagonist is slowly, during the story, sort of tricked into absolutely loving something that is not quite that... I won't go into it more than that for spoiler reasons.

Her death is a little different in the game, because for game reasons you are pursued by FEDRA far longer after killing the guard outside the QZ. They follow either you or the fireflies (I forget which) to the state house. Tess is still bitten by the time you get there, and she commits suicide by cop to cover Ellie & Joel's exit. I prefer that version of her death tbh, as she goes out fighting on her own terms in a blazing gunfight rather than a weird rapey sacrifice thing like in the show

@SOTBS at the beginning i thought that as well but this change is necessary for the adaptation to work, in game we have enemies who give us stress by chasing us to the next checkpoint but in a tv show that build up needs to be different (thats why there are no spores in the tv show). Tess death didnt feel rapey to me and tbh didnt thought about that until this comment, i think she freezes not by fear but because of the bite whe know from ep1 that a bite close to the head makes the turning much much faster and the infection was already setting in
@tehdipstick

When you get to the rendezvous point at the State House in the game it's clear that there's already been a shootout between a FEDRA patrol and the Fireflies, leaving all of the latter dead. Tess dies while holding off FEDRA reinforcements. FEDRA is a lot more aggressive in their pursuit of the Fireflies in the game. In the show we only really had the guard that Joel sold pills to talk about there being more FEDRA patrols guarding the perimeter of the Quarantine Zone that night because of suspected Firefly activity, but in the game FEDRA has patrols going a lot further out into the city to hunt down the Fireflies. While I prefer the more aggressively paranoid and territorial take on FEDRA in the source material, I think it makes more sense in the show for them to be more cautious about venturing too far outside the QZ walls.

I wouldn't say she was fridged. This story is not one that should be viewed from a political lense but one of emotion. The gender, sex or ethnicity is not a defining factor for any of the characters in my opinion. Everyone is HUMAN first, if it makes sense. For me Tess death was more of that to 1. show how dangerous the world is to US, and to Ellie. 2. Also to provide some insight to both us and Ellie again, what sort of world Joel has been forced to become to survive. And how he has basically shut off a lot of his emotional side in order not to feel loss again. If they continue the show as they have done, just trust the process. :)

This is a story trope that originated in a Green Lantern comic book, in 1994. Also known as the Women in Refrigerators Syndrome, the hero character discovers the woman he loves has been murdered and put in his fridge. This motivates the hero on a quest for revenge against the antagonist. Personally, I don't believe this episode of The Last of Us qualifies as Tess just happens to be a woman Joel cares for, but she is not killed by a particular villain to push him to seek them out and punish them.
@vitorhq1

@@theshakyproject2971 well Tess is another person that Joel loved that dies in this universe, leaving him with Ellie alone to go through the journey, which eventually makes them bound in a deeper level since Joel was too traumatized by the loss of his daughter 20 years ago. Tess in this version is both a senior partner and a closest thing to a friend that Joel has got.
