My Fender Lead II from 1980, which I bought in 1999 as a college student with my first summer job salary, is my go-to guitar. It's been lacquered in white following a lacquer incident and upgraded with DiMarzio pickups but it's always been a wonderful guitar. I've played everything from metal to folk-rock and back with it and it never failed me. In recent years, I've seen Parquet Courts and St. Vincent play with it. I'm glad it's finally getting some recognition.

I used to have one of the older Fender Lead guitars, the one with that honkin’ big pick-up near the bridge. I loved it! It was a 1980 model, and played fantastic! Only problem was, it was as HEAVY as a little tank...not Les Paul heavy, but not exactly light, either. These new models, I’ve noticed, are much LIGHTER, making them more user-friendly. Your shoulder will thank you!

I've had my Lead 3 for about 2 years now, and aside from a basic set-up, it hasn't been altered at all. Pretty much my only real criticisms are: the fret ends could be a little smoother... but they're far from bad, and definitely good enough that i still haven't filed them back; and the string ferrules should have been flush mounted. Apart from that, I absolutely ADORE this guitar! I had planned on swapping the alnico 2 humbuckers out for Lace Duallys... but after an initial play, it was immediately evident that the stock pickups are absolutely fantastic, and the switching is spot on for versatility! And it is perfectly weighted! If you want a Hard tail strat... but can't get one... because... (ahem Fender... please put Hard tail Strats back on the basic menu...) i definitely recommend the Lead! Maybe don't tell Fender how good it is though, just incase they increase the price 🤣🤣 Seriously though, well done Fender! This is my favourite guitar. I almost always reach past my 3 Stratocasters and go for the Lead when i want a jam 👍👍

Why create a smaller body - less wood equals less body to the tone and you can hear in in every demo of these - some of which the guitar is actually tuned.
