I am married to a Japanese man and all of our kids were born in Japan when we lived there. Recently in a museum in Michigan, my kids and I were examining an exhibit about Japan and Samurai warriors. A black woman came over and started saying that “everything the Japanese people learned about fighting and armor, they learned from black people.” And she said, “none of this (exhibit on Japanese samurai) would exist without black people.” I was sooo confused. I wanted to ask her to explain but instead carefully herded my children in a different direction.

Yasuke who served as a retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga for a period of 15 months between 1581 and 1582, during the Sengoku period, until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident but he was never a samurai because he was not from a noble house
@am3thysts
20 күн бұрын
The problem is that, while Assassin’s Creed has always been history based and not perfectly accurate, using Yasuke like this is extremely inaccurate. And it breaks the game’s main lore and creates extreme plotholes. 1) The title samurai did not strictly always mean a highly honored warrior extensively trained in combat to serve a lord. Yasuke was essentially a catholic missionary who came to Japan, who became a retainer because a Japanese lord wanted him as an interesting token to keep. A retainer is someone who carried someone’s swords, either the lord’s or someone of higher status. He only trained with a short sword for his 15 months he served in Japan, until his lord and his lord’s son both died, where he returned to the missionaries. He only participated in a single combat encounter, where he was spared by the enemy and let go, suggesting he lost that combat encounter. Tell me, does a catholic missionary or priest that had only basic training with a short sword and lost his only fight then left to go back to Catholic missionary work seem like the main character warrior-turned-assassin of this game? No. 2) It seems that the developers have made him gay. If that is the case, it breaks all Assassin’s Creed lore. The entire franchise’s premise is that a futuristic modern day world uses the DNA of descendants of the assassins from this guild to look into history to put together these pieces of history and this guild’s influence. If he is gay… he didn’t have kids. So there would be no way we could play as him in the game.

This is something that also needs to be to be talked about. He was kept around as a weapon of war and as entertainment, which is racist. But back in those days, the Japanese were very isolated. They weren't used to people of other races. So, you know, the racism back then was. I think it came by honestly because they've never seen it before. And I am glad that they are talking about him and his story. But I don't think that they will tell his story honestly because they're using him as a token to make them look like they've done something amazing and grateful for the community and the truth is, they just want to get paid lots of money, They want a lot of attention.They want fame and they know that if they pander to the right people, they will get that money. Yasuke was a very minor figure in history, and wasn't actually a samurai. What he was, was a slave, owned by the Jesuits, who gifted him to Odu Nobunaga - who found him entertaining. Nobunaga allowed Yasuke to go around dressed as a samurai, and was allowed to carry a sword, however, he was not actually a samurai. After Nobunaga died, Yasuke was given back to the Jesuits, to whom he once again became a slave. There is no record of any great achievement by Yasuke, nor are there any records of him after being returned to the Jesuits. So, apparently, in this game, he goes from being a slave, to being an entertainer, to being a "samurai", to being an assassin, and then back to being a slave, which would make no sense at all. The game would be a lot better if instead it had focused on a Japanese ninja. Because, y'know, ninjas were ACTUAL assassins, which would make perfect sense in a game titled Assassin's Creed.

@TMac-os1hy totally. You'd think that'd be enough for them, a diverse (non-white) strong female character assassinating male targets in a heavily patriarchal society? Seems to me that should have been right up their alley, but apparently, Japanese people aren't diverse enough.
@georged.5595
Ай бұрын
@@TMac-os1hy I suspect that Ubisoft/AC, for all its (quite frankly ridiculous) attempts to be pro-"diversity", and DESPITE having so many women involved in it, actually CANNOT handle a female protagonist. I barely own any AC games and I am not interested in buying anything else from Ubisoft, but from what I've seen: Odyssey gives you the option to play as a woman, but includes the option to play as a different, male character too. I believe this was their first attempt at a female main, and they just...gave you the choice to opt out, which doesn't show much belief that an AC game with women protagonists would sell. Next, Valhalla has a protagonist with a *woman's name* that can ALSO be *a man* if you so choose. This one speaks for itself. So despite their lack of conviction a woman main would sell, they keep trying to make such a game AND they keep giving you the choice of not playing as a woman, which adds to what makes their "diversity" so ridiculous. I should note here that it is _not_ my own opinion that a female protagonist AC would not sell, only the impression I've gotten from the company. I also have no idea why they'd keep trying to make something that they clearly do not believe in. Neither have I tried to figure out why a group with so many women can't write women and tbh I don't actually care. Just an observation I made. I hope my comment was easily understandable.

It’s pretty obvious they just picked him because he’s black. Normally Assassin’s Creed games star an original character from that region instead of a historical character. From a writing and gameplay perspective this allows the writer and gamer more freedom in determining what kind of character they’re playing, and from a storytelling perspective it makes sense because you’re playing an assassin so skilled history never recorded their name. With this storytelling convention it would be acceptable for a historical character like Yasuke to be an NPC you interact with in game, but not the protagonist. But I wasn’t planning on playing the game regardless so it doesn’t really impact my purchase.

It’s a shame really as Japan’s history and the whole Samurai history is both incredibly interesting and aesthetically very, very cool - so it’s a shame to ignore the people of which the game is based on. This included being able to read and write (preferably perfectly). I hardly think that he was able to master that language in about a year. And it is also recorded that he was sent away after Nobunaga's defeat and it's reported that the reason for this that he was viewed as an animal, not a human being. Like a Knight, the title of Samurai was an actual rank that you achieved through martial/military prowess, something that “Yasuke” did not truly partake in as he only had one battle/skirmish under his reputation (where samurais usually had a much longer prospect period). And although it was recorded that he did engage enemy forces, it was never clear how intense or to what volume. After battle, since Nobunaga was forced to commit seppuku, he was passed down to Nobunaga’s son and then was returned to the very Jesuits that gave him to Nobunaga, originally. Bottom line, Yasuke was NOT a samurai.

Yasuke is an excellent historical figure to use as a video game protagonist. There isn’t a lot known about him, therefore there can be a lot of creativity with him. Also, he served Nobunaga Oda who was an extremely relevant figure of that time.

Yasuke is mentioned to be a "warrior" but never a "samurai," nor is he ever mentioned to have fought in any battles. Oda Nobunaga, the ruler of Japan at the time, was a man fascinated with anything foreign, usual, or rare, and Yasuke was the epitome of all such things, so Nobunaga took a liking to him. He was a huge man, even by the standards of African slaves, as people were much shorter back then. The Europeans at the time tended to buy large African men as slaves as they are better for menial labour, which is one of the theories why African Americans descended from American slaves are so huge. Yasuke was also likely never recognized as a samurai by the people, as when Nobunaga was killed, Yasuke was not forced to commit ritual suicide like a samurai would, but was instead returned to the Jesuits where he lived the remainder of his life as a slave. But yes, none of this matters, we know the REAL reason why Ubisoft did this, it's cuz he's Black and these are just Asians. To Western liberals, Blacks are sacred and nobody gives a sht about Asians.

There is no evidence he was a samurai. He was only in Japan as a "retainer" for Nobunaga for about a year until Nobunaga was killed. He was a glorified pet that has been mythologized by people who deify blacks. I expected better from you.

The worst part about this whole situation is the fact that they could have added yasuke easily, and no one would have been able to say a word. In truth, he did exist under Oda Nobunaga, but there's nothing that says he was trained as a samurai. All they had to do was make him an NPC that the Assassins met along their journey. Then, after the game was over, they could have made yasuke as a DLC adventure after the fall of Nobunaga. Netflix did this, and it was awesome

I love how Yasuke, a very famous figure in Japanese history caused such a huff. He was a literal black knight who mastered multiple extremely heavy weapons in order to brutalize his lords enemies on the battlefield. A true giant of a man for the time and place.

The sad part is he wasn't a samurai, he was a slave his masters mocked by putting him in samurai clothes. He was at best a novelty.

so ive been researching yasuke to see if he indeed was a slave and not this historical hero they paint him to be, but ive found nothing in regards of him being a slave in japan. its posible that he was trafficked as a child. but everything i read says he was a free man by the time Alessandro Valignano, a missionary who who took yasuke with him to japan. there is much more that would take to long to type. so my question to you is where did you get your information from regarding him as being a slave and mocked? this isn’t a gotcha moment, im genually curious. i know how the internet makes there own stories up. so if you know where it says he was a slave while in japan id love to read about it.

The biggest thing is, we already had an awesome open world game where you played as a Japanese samurai - Ghosts of Tsushima. What’s more, it was developed in the West! When Sony looked at the finished product, someone on the board said, “They’re more Japanese than WE are!!” Whether or not that last part is true is debatable, but I can dream.

Yasuke was purchased from an Italian merchant and used as a glorified caddy. He had a short sword. Nothing even remotely close to a samurai and no military accomplishments. He was a helper for a year and then went back to the Italians when Nobunaga was killed. This whole thing is a travesty.

There was in fact a black retainer, not a black Samurai. For European heritage that’s there was a black squire but he wasn’t a night.

Yasuke was a man of African origin who served as a retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga for a period of 15 months between 1581 and 1582, during the Sengoku period, until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.

Bold-faced lie. Yasuke was not a warrior or a samurai, he was a slave that carried the sword of the samurai that enslaved him. They look even more foolish completely twisting the true story to fit their narrative, but it’s simply false history they’re pushing.
